Board of Control for Cricket in India vice-president Rajiv Shukla defended India’s selection process after Vaibhav Sooryavanshi made his India debut in the second T20I against England in Manchester.
Shukla said the BCCI gives opportunities on merit and rejected social media claims that Sooryavanshi had been unfairly overlooked. The Times of India reported Shukla’s comments after the teenager was named in India’s playing XI.
Shukla says Sooryavanshi received his chance at the right time
Rajiv Shukla congratulated Sooryavanshi on his debut and said the board does not treat players unfairly when selection opportunities arise.
Shukla told ANI: “Huge congratulations to Vaibhav Sooryavanshi on his debut and for receiving this opportunity. The BCCI does not treat anyone unfairly; those who deserve it get their chance. There was a lot of uproar on social media claiming that opportunities weren’t being given; people were criticising both the coach and the captain. But that wasn’t the case.”
Shukla added that he had expected Sooryavanshi to get an opportunity when the team management considered the timing right. Shukla said: “I had said just the other day that when the right moment arrived, he would certainly get his chance, and yesterday, he did. I believe he will perform well in the future and truly come into his own. It is an excellent decision by the team management, and we should appreciate it.”
Sooryavanshi becomes India’s youngest international cricketer
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi became India’s youngest international cricketer after being named in the playing XI for the second T20I against England in Manchester.
Sooryavanshi was 15 years and 99 days old when he made his debut. The Bihar batter also became the youngest player from a Test-playing nation to make a T20I debut.
The left-handed opener scored 14 off 10 balls with two sixes before being dismissed stumped. The milestone moved Sooryavanshi past the previous Indian age records held by Sachin Tendulkar and Piyush Chawla.
