Sri Lanka used the second new ball to disrupt India’s push for a larger first-innings total. The hosts removed Rishabh Pant, returning batter Rahul and overnight centurion Padikkal during the opening 90 minutes of play after rain had delayed the start by more than five hours.
Second new ball changes the contest
Sri Lanka’s bowlers found sharper turn and bounce after changing their lengths with the second new ball. Debutant Keshara Nuwantha led the response and finished the reported period with 3 for 175.
Rahul, who had retired hurt on day one, was dismissed for 82 after sharp turn produced a catching chance. Ravindra Jadeja was later trapped in front by a delivery that continued with the arm from a testing length.
Padikkal remained India’s most secure batter during the collapse before Prabath Jayasuriya dismissed him for 167. Jayasuriya also removed Jurel and returned figures of 4 for 109.
Jurel and Suthar rebuild for India
Dhruv Jurel and Manav Suthar added 55 runs for the seventh wicket after India slipped to 377 for 6 in the 99th over. The partnership helped India regain momentum and move beyond 400.

Jurel scored 51 at a brisk pace before Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva caught him off Jayasuriya. Suthar continued to contribute as India advanced to 460 for 9.
Rain compresses play in Galle
Persistent rain prevented the scheduled early start and kept the teams off the field for more than five hours. Play was eventually scheduled to begin at 2:35pm after the ground staff cleared the covers and prepared the outfield.
Changing cloud cover, strong crosswinds and repeated showers complicated the ground staff’s work. The match report from Galle also indicated that further weather interruptions remained possible over the following three days.
