Manav Suthar and Ravindra Jadeja shared seven wickets as India bowled Sri Lanka out for 284 on day three of the first Test at the Galle International Stadium. Suthar returned 4/76 and Jadeja took 3/57 after India had made 462 in the first innings.

The match marked the first time Suthar and Jadeja bowled together for India. The two left-arm spinners operated with different methods, with Jadeja maintaining a consistent line and length while Suthar varied his angles, pace and release points.

Seven wickets underline contrasting methods

Suthar and Jadeja combined for seven wickets in 42.4 overs despite Sri Lanka’s left-handed batters facing much of their bowling. Jadeja was India’s most economical bowler and delivered the most maidens, while Suthar finished with the larger wicket tally.

A Times of India report from Galle noted that Jadeja’s sustained pressure allowed Suthar to impart more revolutions on the ball and search for turn through changes in angle and release.

Suthar said Jadeja’s ability to keep landing the ball in the same area offered an immediate lesson. The younger spinner identified consistency and the creation of false shots as key aspects he wanted to learn from the senior all-rounder.

Sri Lanka recover before India regain control

India took five wickets in the first session before Sonal Dinusha and Niroshan Dickwella led Sri Lanka’s recovery through a wicketless second session. Dinusha made 100 and Dickwella scored 80 as the pair swept effectively, rotated the strike and handled the turning ball with control.

Suthar said India remained focused on creating chances even when the older ball offered less assistance. India eventually broke the partnership and completed the innings during the final session.

“I feel that on this wicket, the more consistent you are, the more purchase you get on the wicket,” Suthar said. “So that’s what we were trying to do.”

India’s left-arm spin combination shows flexibility

India’s decision to field three left-arm spinners had raised questions about variety, but Suthar and Jadeja created different challenges through pace, angles and control. The team management had preferred that combination to selecting off-spinner Saransh Jain.

Jadeja repeatedly attacked the same areas and restricted scoring, while Suthar used more wrist and finger action to alter the ball’s response from the surface. The first innings provided an early indication that the two bowlers can operate together rather than compete for the same role, although one innings remains a limited sample.
