Sai Sudharsan is highly unlikely to be cleared for India’s two-Test series against Sri Lanka, starting on August 15, 2026, in Galle. The designated No. 3 batter is undergoing rehabilitation for a foot niggle at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.

The Indian team management had hoped Sudharsan would recover before the opening Test, but the required fitness clearance is now considered unlikely. An official update from the BCCI remains pending.

Rasheed and Sarfaraz lead the replacement race

Shaik Rasheed and Sarfaraz Khan are the leading replacement options, while Ruturaj Gaikwad is also under consideration. A Times of India report says Sarfaraz has been at the Centre of Excellence for a fitness assessment for more than a week, while Rasheed has been asked to report to the Bengaluru facility on Sunday.

Rasheed recently represented India A in two matches in Sri Lanka, scoring 45, 63 and 20 across three innings. The 21-year-old has remained on the selectors’ radar and was also scheduled to attend a specialist batting camp at the Centre of Excellence alongside R Smaran and Aman Mokhade.

Sarfaraz remains in the selectors’ plans after working on his fitness and gaining international experience. The Mumbai batter has also reportedly been advised to bat higher in the order during the domestic season.

India management wants another specialist batter

India’s team management has communicated a need for another specialist batter after Sudharsan’s injury concern reduced the available options. The selectors had wanted to assess more specialist batters, but Devdutt Padikkal, Sudharsan and Dhruv Jurel occupied batting places during the two India A fixtures.

Rasheed’s recent India A performances and positive feedback from coaches at the Centre of Excellence have strengthened his case. Sarfaraz offers previous Test experience and a strong game against spin, while Gaikwad remains an outside option following his India A appearances.

BCCI decision remains unconfirmed

The BCCI has not announced a replacement for Sudharsan or confirmed his withdrawal from the Sri Lanka series. The final selection will depend on Sudharsan’s medical clearance and the selectors’ assessment of the available batting options.
