Bengal Police arrested Bengal and Delhi Capitals wicketkeeper-batter Abishek Porel on Tuesday in connection with a rape complaint filed by a medical student, according to an official quoted by PTI in a Times of India report.

Porel, 23, was taken into custody in Hooghly and formally arrested after questioning. Bengal Police subsequently sent Porel for a medical examination and produced him before the Chinsurah Court.
The allegations against Porel have not been established in court. Porel remains an accused while the police investigation and judicial process continue.

Complaint includes allegations of rape and intimidation
The complaint filed at Mogra Police Station alleges that Porel established a physical relationship with the complainant after promising marriage. The complaint also contains allegations of criminal intimidation and the recording of intimate moments.
The complainant alleges that she first came into contact with Porel in 2023 and that the relationship later led to discussions about marriage involving both families. The complainant further alleges that Porel assaulted and confined her during an incident in Delhi on April 2, 2026, denied her food and left her requiring medical attention.

Arrest follows Calcutta High Court direction
The arrest followed a Calcutta High Court order dated July 14 directing Bengal Police to continue efforts to apprehend Porel and another accused in connection with the case.
Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya also directed police to seize electronic devices to prevent the alleged dissemination of private material linked to the complainant. Police informed the court that officers had already seized a pen drive and sent it for forensic examination.
The complainant approached the Calcutta High Court alleging police inaction. The complainant also alleged that Porel had threatened to make private photographs public.
Cricket career and legal status
Porel represents Bengal in domestic cricket and has been part of the Delhi Capitals squad in the Indian Premier League. The left-handed wicketkeeper-batter made his first-class debut for Bengal during the 2021-22 season, later received India A call-ups and joined the Delhi Capitals setup in 2023.
Porel previously denied the allegations and indicated that he would respond in detail after the police inquiry. The arrest advances the legal process but does not establish guilt, which can be determined only through judicial proceedings.
