CSK Files Official BCCI Complaint Over Stereotypical Song Played by RCB DJ
The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have formally complained to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) regarding the conduct of the stadium DJ during their Indian Premier League (IPL) match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). The grievance centers on the track “Dosa, idli, sambar, chutney,” played at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, which the CSK franchise categorized as an inappropriate stereotype mocking their Tamil Nadu identity.
Chinnaswamy Stadium Incident and Official Response
The complaint follows the high-stakes May 18, 2024, fixture that determined the final playoff position for the season. During the match, the stadium DJ repeatedly played the audio track, prompting immediate backlash from the CSK management. CSK managing director Kasi Viswanathan expressed disappointment with the stadium entertainment protocols.
“The DJs are usually around to support the home team. But at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, it was different,” Viswanathan stated in a media interaction.
Origins of the Controversial Audio Track
The audio clip originates from a viral social media video involving Punjab Kings (PBKS) wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma, correcting earlier erroneous reports that linked the incident to an RCB player in 2025. In the PBKS video, Sharma sang the phrase when asked what came to mind regarding Chennai.
During a subsequent CSK versus PBKS match at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium, the Chennai DJ played the same audio clip to mock Sharma upon his dismissal. CSK management immediately intervened to establish strict neutrality protocols for their in-house entertainment staff.
“After that incident, there hasn’t been any repeat of it. The DJ isn’t supposed to make any comment on the opposition players. Moreover, we are fortunate to have a lovely fanbase that cheers us in numbers,” Viswanathan confirmed to ESPN Cricinfo regarding their internal policy updates.
Match Context and Statistical Overview
The May 18 encounter was significant for both franchises. RCB won the fixture by 27 runs, securing their sixth consecutive victory of the tournament and eliminating CSK from playoff contention. Previous reports inaccurately claimed RCB had won four consecutive matches against CSK; in reality, this victory ended a dominant run by Chennai in the head-to-head matchup.
