England dismissed Pakistan for 171, replied with 409 and then bowled the visitors out for 135 before tea on the third day. The match was England’s first Test since Ben Stokes retired and Brendon McCullum left his position as head coach.
England’s pace attack controls both innings
Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue took five wickets each in Pakistan’s first innings before Robinson and Jofra Archer claimed three apiece during the second-innings collapse.
England won the toss and chose to bowl, with Pakistan falling from 117/3 to 171 all out. Abdullah Shafique made 61 and provided the main resistance as Robinson and Tongue shared all 10 wickets.

Pakistan reached 59/3 by lunch in the second innings, but Mohammad Rizwan’s 41 could not prevent another collapse. Archer returned 3/50 and Robinson finished with 3/29 as Pakistan were dismissed for 135 in 37.3 overs.
Brook, Cox and Root build a decisive advantage
England’s 409 established a first-innings lead of 238 after Harry Brook scored 91, Jordan Cox made 73 and Root contributed 66.
Dan Lawrence added 51 as England maintained control despite rain interruptions on the second day. Pakistan left-arm spinner Ali Usman took his maiden Test five-wicket haul, finishing with 5/95.

Headingley result puts England ahead in the series
England’s victory was the team’s biggest innings win over Pakistan at Headingley and its second successive innings victory against the visitors at the venue after the innings-and-55-run result in 2018.
England’s pace bowlers took all 20 Pakistan wickets in the match, the second such instance for England against Pakistan after the Lord’s Test in 2001. The result leaves Pakistan trailing 1-0 with two Tests remaining.
