Dinesh Karthik has suggested that differing priorities between India head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar may have contributed to selection changes during India’s recent T20I tour of the UK.
India, captained by Shreyas Iyer, lost the two-match series against Ireland 2-0 before suffering a 4-0 defeat in the five-match T20I series against England. The results increased scrutiny on Gambhir and raised questions about India’s handling of Sanju Samson and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, according to a Times of India report.
Why Karthik sees a possible disconnect
Karthik linked India’s repeated selection changes to what he believes could be contrasting objectives for Agarkar and Gambhir. Karthik suggested that Agarkar may be focused on developing a group for the future, while Gambhir may be prioritising immediate series results.
Karthik said: “A bit of friction between the chief selector and head coach. I feel Agarkar has long-term plans, and the current coach is saying, ‘You know, I want to win every game I play.’ Hence, the confusion we see unfolding before us. Is it ideal for the players? Definitely not.”
Karthik framed the possible disagreement as his assessment rather than confirmation of a formal dispute. Karthik later said there “maybe” was a conflict because the chief selector appeared to be looking towards the future while the coach faced pressure to win each series.

India’s UK results and selection changes
India lost both T20I series on the UK leg, while Samson and Sooryavanshi moved in and out of the playing XI.
| Opponent | Series format | India’s result |
|---|---|---|
| Ireland | Two-match T20I series | Lost 2-0 |
| England | Five-match T20I series | Lost 4-0 |
Sooryavanshi had impressed in the IPL and was tipped by many to make his international debut against Ireland, but Samson retained his place in the XI. Samson was dropped after three low scores, allowing the 15-year-old Sooryavanshi to debut against England.
Sooryavanshi did not make an impact on debut and was left out of the fifth and final T20I against England. Samson returned to the side for that match.
Squad depth adds pressure on players
Karthik said India’s playing depth could make selection uncertainty more difficult for players trying to secure a regular place.

Karthik said: “Everyone is thinking that if I have a couple of bad games, anyone can replace me. On top of that, this happens, it’s definitely a situation that India needs to be aware of and rectify as soon as possible.”
Karthik’s comments focused on the effect of frequent changes and the possibility that selectors and team management were working towards different timelines.
BCCI review set to examine the tour
The BCCI has confirmed that it will review India’s poor T20I performances during the UK leg, with the team’s results and selection decisions expected to be examined.
The source report did not provide a timetable for the review or confirm any action involving Gambhir, Agarkar, Iyer or the selected players.
