Dhruv Jurel completed a determined century for India on day two of the second Test against Sri Lanka at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo on August 24, 2026. The innings strengthened Jurel’s case for a sustained role as a specialist batter in India’s Test side.

Jurel reached 95 with a boundary through the leg side before rain brought a short delay. The right-hander then moved carefully to 99 and completed his hundred with a quick single, diving into the crease after the mid-off fielder missed the stumps. Mohammed Siraj remained with Jurel and helped protect the partnership from the other end.

Jurel rebuilt India’s innings across two days

Jurel combined patience with controlled scoring as India worked through pressure from Sri Lanka’s pace and spin attacks. The wicketkeeper-batter began the repair effort with Ravindra Jadeja, who made 43 before being dismissed after experiencing wrist discomfort on the opening day.

Jurel then batted with debutant Saransh Jain through the closing stages of day one. Saransh was dismissed early on day two, bringing Rishabh Pant to the crease after Pant had taken a blow to his wrist.

Jurel and Pant absorbed Sri Lanka’s early pressure before increasing the scoring rate. India scored at nearly 4.5 runs per over while the two wicketkeepers were together, although neither batter needed to take sustained risks.

The hundred strengthens Jurel’s selection case

Jurel’s century arrived during a series carrying significant selection weight for the 25-year-old. India had continued to back Jurel’s technique and work ethic, but his returns had included 29 runs across four innings in the preceding series defeat against South Africa.

Jurel also faced competition from Sarfaraz Khan for a middle-order place. India selected Jurel after considering his work in training and on development tours, including India A exposure in Galle.

Jurel had not looked fully comfortable during the Colombo warm-up fixture and match simulations, but he responded with a valuable 51 lower down the order in the first Test. His century in the second Test provided a more substantial return on India’s continued selection faith.

Control against pace and spin shaped the innings

Jurel handled Sri Lanka’s short-ball plan without losing his shape and remained composed against spinners Prabath Jayasuriya and Keshara Nuwantha. The Colombo surface rewarded patience, and Jurel limited loose strokes while waiting for scoring opportunities.

Jurel’s preparation before the Test had included a productive net session alongside Pant and Shubman Gill. His footwork against spin appeared more assured in that session, and the same control carried into the match.

Jurel adds rare lower-order century context

Jurel became only the second India batter after Hardik Pandya to score a Test century from No. 7 or lower in Sri Lanka, according to the original match report. Pandya made 108 at Pallekele in 2017.

The previous Test century by an India batter at No. 7 or lower was Nitish Kumar Reddy’s 114 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in December 2024. Jurel’s innings therefore gave captain Shubman Gill and coach Gautam Gambhir another lower-order batting option, although his longer-term place will depend on continued contributions.
