Former England spinner Graeme Swann has said England could face a difficult challenge if Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is selected for his India debut in the upcoming five-match T20I series.
Sooryavanshi is yet to play for India, but the 15-year-old Rajasthan Royals opener has become a major selection talking point after India’s 2-0 T20I series defeat to Ireland. The Times of India reported Swann’s comments, including his view that Sooryavanshi has looked “almost unplayable” in recent times.
Swann says England have limited evidence against Sooryavanshi
Swann said England’s bowlers may have video and IPL exposure to study, but he believes there is little proof that any attack has consistently kept Sooryavanshi quiet.
Speaking on JioStar, Swann said: “It’s hard to prepare for a player like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. He is still new to international cricket, but he has already played two IPL seasons. That means there is video footage available. Some of the England bowlers may have bowled to him in the IPL. But the truth is, no one has really had much success against him so far. He has looked almost unplayable.”

The selection debate has grown because India are looking for a response after the Ireland series, while Sooryavanshi remains uncapped at international level.
Jofra Archer may know the opener better than most
Swann identified Jofra Archer as one England bowler who may have more useful knowledge of Sooryavanshi because both players have been associated with Rajasthan Royals.
Swann said Archer has seen Sooryavanshi from the dugout, bowled to him in the nets, and watched him closely. Swann added that Archer has probably seen more of the left-handed opener than anyone else in the England attack.

IPL 2026 form put Sooryavanshi into India contention
Sooryavanshi earned his India squad call-up after a strong IPL 2026 season for Rajasthan Royals. The source article states that he finished as the competition’s highest run-scorer with 776 runs at a strike rate of 237.30.
The same report credits Sooryavanshi with one century, five half-centuries, and a tournament-leading 72 sixes in that IPL campaign. Those returns have kept attention on India’s team sheet before the England series begins.
India have not confirmed in the source article whether Sooryavanshi will make his debut against England. Until the playing XI is named, his first international appearance remains unconfirmed.
