Shreyas Iyer became the joint second-fastest Indian batter to reach 3,000 ODI runs during India’s second ODI against Afghanistan at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Wednesday.

The Mumbai batter reached the mark in his 72nd ODI innings, drawing level with Shikhar Dhawan and moving ahead of Virat Kohli, who had taken 75 innings for the same milestone. The Times of India reported that only India captain Shubman Gill has reached 3,000 ODI runs faster among Indian batters, completing the milestone in 62 innings earlier in the series.

Gill’s innings included 22 fours and two sixes, and the century was his first ODI hundred since becoming India’s full-time ODI skipper. Kishan reached his fifty in 52 balls before scoring his next 53 runs in 19 deliveries.

Gill and Kishan added 224 runs for the third wicket before Iyer later made 26. Afghanistan were set 403 to win, with India aiming to seal the three-match series after taking a 1-0 lead.
