India recorded the biggest victory in their Test history on Monday, beating Afghanistan by an innings and 300 runs in the one-off Test at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh.

Manav Suthar, a 23-year-old left-arm spinner from Rajasthan, took 6/33 in Afghanistan’s first innings and added one wicket in the second innings to finish with match figures of 7/62. The Times of India report said Suthar’s debut spell set up India’s innings victory and placed him among India’s notable debut performers.

India’s record win came after Suthar created the first-innings break

Suthar dismissed Afghanistan for 152 in the first innings after India had declared on 564/8. The left-arm spinner bowled with control, found turn and bounce, and gave India a 412-run lead before the follow-on.

Suthar became only the 10th Indian bowler and seventh Indian spinner to take a five-wicket haul on Test debut. Suthar also became one of the Indian bowlers to take six wickets in an innings in a first Test appearance.

Suthar’s 6/33 was the best innings return by an Indian on Test debut in 38 years. Narendra Hirwani had taken 8/61 against the West Indies in Chennai in 1988 and later finished that match with 16 wickets.

Before Suthar, Narendra Hirwani, Ravichandran Ashwin, Dilip Doshi and Syed Abid Ali had taken six wickets in an innings during their first Test appearances for India.

Rahul and Gill centuries drove India’s 564/8 declared

India were asked to bat first and built the match around a large first-innings total. KL Rahul and captain Shubman Gill scored centuries, while Sai Sudharsan, Rishabh Pant and Washington Sundar made half-centuries.

India declared at 564/8, which left Afghanistan needing a long reply to stay in the match. Afghanistan were bowled out for 152 in the first innings and were asked to follow on.

Afghanistan fell for 152 and 112 against India’s spinners

Afghanistan’s second innings ended at 112 in 35.5 overs. Washington Sundar took 4/36, while Kuldeep Yadav took 3/30 as India completed the win midway through the third day.

Afghanistan’s batters struggled against India’s spin attack and also lost wickets to poor shot selection. The collapse in both innings confirmed India’s innings-and-300-run margin.

India’s largest Test victories are now led by the New Chandigarh result

The innings-and-300-run win over Afghanistan surpassed India’s previous record Test victory, an innings-and-272-run result against the West Indies in Rajkot in 2018.

Innings and 262 runs Afghanistan Bengaluru 2018
Innings and 239 runs Bangladesh Mirpur 2007

India’s win also sits among the 10 biggest innings victories in Test cricket history, jointly ranking as the 10th-largest innings win overall.
