RCB Face GT in IPL 2026 Qualifier 1: Patidar Addresses Venue Shift and High-Scoring Pitches
Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will face Gujarat Titans (GT) in Qualifier 1 of the Indian Premier League 2026 at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala. The winner advances directly to the championship match at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) relocated the final to Ahmedabad citing operational reasons, removing the possibility of RCB playing a home match at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium for the title. RCB captain Rajat Patidar addressed the administrative decision during the pre-match press conference on Monday.
“It is not in my control. I think the BCCI has to decide where the final is going to be. We are focused on reaching the final,” Patidar told reporters.
League Standings and Playoff Implications
RCB enters the playoffs following a dominant league stage. Both RCB and GT concluded their 14-match campaigns with 18 points, but Bengaluru secured the top seed due to a superior net run rate. According to ESPN Cricinfo records, this marks one of the tightest tie-breaker finishes atop the points table.
| Team | Matches | Points | Net Run Rate Status | Playoff Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Royal Challengers Bengaluru | 14 | 18 | 1st (Higher NRR) | Qualifier 1 |
| Gujarat Titans | 14 | 18 | 2nd (Lower NRR) | Qualifier 1 |
The loser of Tuesday’s match retains a second opportunity to reach the final through Qualifier 2, where they will play the winner of the Eliminator match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals.
Bowler Challenges in High-Scoring Season
Patidar commented on the harsh conditions for bowlers in a tournament characterized by routine 200-plus totals. According to the RCB captain, scores between 220 and 250 no longer guarantee victory due to three specific ground conditions:
- Batting-friendly wickets offering minimal assistance to seamers
- Small boundaries reducing the margin for error
- Heavy dew making it difficult to grip the ball in the second innings
“I feel it is more challenging for the bowlers,” Patidar noted. “Especially for fast bowlers, even a small mistake goes for six. Both teams have done pretty well throughout the season. On the given day, whichever team executes its plans better and stays calm under pressure, is going to win.”
Official Squads for Qualifier 1
Both franchises feature adjusted rosters following recent player acquisitions authorized by the International Cricket Council (ICC) global player release windows.
