Ruturaj Gaikwad Defends CSK Roster After Defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Ruturaj Gaikwad maintained a positive outlook despite his team suffering a six-wicket defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. The loss highlighted challenges for the defending champions, who struggled to defend a modest total against an aggressive Hyderabad batting lineup.

Sunrisers Hyderabad chased down the 166-run target in 18.1 overs, driven by Aiden Markram, who scored 50 off 36 balls, and a rapid 37 off 12 balls from Abhishek Sharma. The result solidified Hyderabad’s position in the upper half of the Indian Premier League points table.

Speaking during the post-match press conference, Gaikwad stated that his team remained competitive but failed to capitalize during important moments.

“It was a tight contest right until the end,” Gaikwad said. “We were in the game until the final few overs. The pitch did not change much throughout the course of the match. I thought 165 was a par score, but we missed out on taking wickets at regular intervals. I am still proud of the boys for their effort.”

Failure to Build Pressure

The Chennai skipper noted that his bowling unit could not maintain pressure after securing breakthroughs. Hyderabad’s aggressive powerplay approach severely dented Chennai’s defense early in the second innings.

“We needed to cash in on the opportunity immediately after taking a wicket,” Gaikwad explained. “That is how you build pressure on the opposition. We just were not able to do that today.”

Gaikwad acknowledged that missing frontline personnel affected the team balance, specifically noting the absence of injured bowlers like Mustafizur Rahman and Matheesha Pathirana for this fixture. Despite a depleted squad, the captain pointed to individual performances as positive indicators for the remainder of the season.

“Given the limited squad availability and the combinations we had to field, the team performed well,” he added. “We are building up. Shivam Dube’s form is a great sign for us. He played another solid knock today. We are building a competitive unit.”

Match Statistics

Earlier in the evening, Sunrisers Hyderabad won the toss and elected to bowl. Pat Cummins and his bowling attack effectively contained the Chennai top order. Gaikwad scored 26 runs off 21 deliveries before falling to Shahbaz Ahmed.

Ajinkya Rahane provided stability with a measured 35 off 30 balls. Shivam Dube accelerated the run rate, contributing 45 runs off 24 balls, including four sixes. However, Chennai failed to accelerate in the death overs, finishing at 165 for 5.

Team Top Batter Top Bowler Final Score
Chennai Super Kings Shivam Dube (45 off 24) Moeen Ali (2/23) 165/5 (20 overs)
Sunrisers Hyderabad Aiden Markram (50 off 36) Bhuvneshwar Kumar (1/28) 166/4 (18.1 overs)

Looking Ahead

Gaikwad expressed gratitude to the traveling Chennai supporters. While acknowledging the challenges of an away defeat, he remained confident in the squad’s ability to bounce back in their upcoming home fixtures.

  • Powerplay Bowling: Chennai managed only one wicket in the first six overs, allowing Hyderabad to score 78 runs.
  • Middle Overs Strategy: Hyderabad spinners successfully restricted Chennai’s boundary scoring between overs 7 and 15.
  • Impact Players: The utilization of substitutes yielded mixed results, with Mukesh Choudhary conceding 27 runs in his single over for Chennai.

“The fans all around the world come and support us through thick and thin,” Gaikwad noted. “We will definitely return as a stronger unit in the next game.”
