Michael Vaughan Advises Jacob Bethell to Leave Royal Challengers Bengaluru Amid Injury Concerns
Former England national team captain Michael Vaughan has advised all-rounder Jacob Bethell to withdraw from his ongoing Indian Premier League campaign with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Vaughan cited Bethell’s recent finger injury and the upcoming Test series against the New Zealand national cricket team as primary reasons for an immediate return to the United Kingdom.
Injury Disrupts IPL Campaign
Bethell entered the tournament with high expectations following strong international performances earlier in the year. However, the left-handed batter has experienced a challenging season, struggling to secure a consistent role in the middle order.
| Player | Matches Played | Runs Scored | Current Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jacob Bethell | 9 | 163 | Sidelined (Finger Injury) |
A finger injury officially ruled Bethell out of the final league-stage match against Sunrisers Hyderabad. His absence forced the Bengaluru management to reorganize their batting lineup alongside Virat Kohli. The franchise navigated these adjustments while waiting for the return of top-order batter Phil Salt ahead of the playoffs, though captain Rajat Patidar successfully rejoined the playing XI after recovering from his own finger issue.
Prioritizing National Duty
With England preparing for their summer Test schedule regulated by the International Cricket Council starting June 4, Vaughan emphasized that international preparation must supersede franchise commitments, particularly for a player currently sidelined.
Speaking on Cricbuzz regarding the situation, Vaughan outlined his primary arguments for Bethell’s early departure:
- He requires immediate physical evaluation by the England and Wales Cricket Board medical staff to determine his exact availability for the New Zealand series.
- Head coach Brendon McCullum arrives in the UK on Sunday to begin the mandatory national team training camp on Monday.
- Given his current injury status, the all-rounder is highly unlikely to feature in the playing XI during the upcoming playoff matches.
“If Jacob Bethell is injured, he should be on the next plane home to England,” Vaughan stated. “England plays a Test match on June 4th, making sure that England has a look at him to see if he is fit for the Test match against New Zealand. I would think he is better off back in the UK, just getting assessed.”
Balancing Franchise Experience and Test Preparation
While acknowledging the developmental benefits of the franchise environment, Vaughan maintained a strict stance on the current calendar conflict. The former captain noted that Bethell gained valuable exposure during his time in India, but the immediate focus must shift to red-ball cricket.
“I am a big believer in the IPL. If you are going to play, it grows your game massively,” Vaughan added. “As a young player, he was here last year, so he learned a lot. This year, he has played a little bit but has not had a huge amount of success. But if he is injured, England has a training camp this week. He should be back in the UK with the team.”
