Chennai Super Kings have appointed Zaheer Khan as head coach following the end of the franchise’s long-term association with Stephen Fleming. Zaheer secured the position after negotiations with Hemang Badani and other candidates failed to produce an agreement.

A Times of India report said CSK’s leadership group, under owner Rupa Gurunath, wanted an Indian-led support staff but did not reach long-term terms with the coaches under consideration.

Why negotiations with Hemang Badani ended

Badani’s negotiations reportedly broke down over the proposed contract length and the limited scope of the role. Badani had been considered the front-runner and reached advanced discussions with CSK over compensation and tenure.

An unnamed source quoted in the report said Badani was initially given the impression that he could work across at least three teams in the wider franchise structure. Albie Morkel’s appointment as Joburg Super Kings head coach in SA20 reduced that proposed portfolio, while CSK’s preference for a year-by-year contract remained the main obstacle.

Badani and another former India cricketer involved in the process reportedly wanted at least two years to shape the squad and coaching structure. CSK was unwilling to make that commitment, according to the report.

Contract details remain undisclosed

Zaheer’s contract duration and compensation have not been confirmed. The report placed CSK’s expected compensation range at Rs 5 crore to Rs 7 crore, but the franchise had not publicly verified those figures.

The report also quoted an unnamed industry source who claimed MS Dhoni was playing a central role in decisions alongside Rupa Gurunath. CSK did not provide an official confirmation of Dhoni’s specific involvement in the recruitment process.

Zaheer brings previous IPL management experience

Zaheer has previously held management and coaching-related positions with Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants. The CSK appointment is his third role with an IPL franchise after his playing career.

Zaheer said joining CSK was an honour and referred to his previous contests against the franchise as a player. He also highlighted the atmosphere created by supporters at Chepauk.

Rupa Gurunath confirmed Zaheer’s appointment and said his playing career and experience working with young talent made him a valuable addition to CSK’s setup.

Zaheer last played in the IPL in 2017. The former India fast bowler finished his IPL playing career with 102 wickets from 100 matches.
