Shabnim Ismail Comes Out of Retirement for South Africa’s 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Campaign

The South Africa women’s national cricket team has officially announced its 15-player squad for the 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in England and Wales. The roster features a major roster shift: the return of legendary fast bowler Shabnim Ismail from international retirement.

Ismail, who previously retired following the 2023 tournament in South Africa, returns to bolster a bowling attack aiming to capture the nation’s first ICC title. The Proteas have finished as runners-up in the previous two editions, losing to Australia in the 2023 final and New Zealand in 2024.

Veterans Return to Strengthen Proteas Squad

The 37-year-old Ismail brings elite experience to the squad. Across 113 T20 Internationals, the right-arm pacer has secured 123 wickets at an economy rate of 5.77, establishing herself as South Africa’s all-time leading wicket-taker in the format. Her pace in the powerplay will complement a bowling unit that includes Ayabonga Khaka and left-arm spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba.

Former captain Dane van Niekerk is also listed in the squad, signaling a reunion of South Africa’s golden generation. Star batter Laura Wolvaardt will maintain her leadership role, captaining the team for her second consecutive T20 World Cup campaign.
