KKR Captain Ajinkya Rahane Fined Rs 12 Lakh for Slow Over-Rate Following Defeat to CSK
NEW DELHI: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Ajinkya Rahane has been fined Rs 12 lakh for maintaining a slow over-rate during their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 fixture against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The match, held at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, ended in a 32-run defeat for Kolkata.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the penalty was imposed because this was Kolkata’s first minimum over-rate offense of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct.
Chennai Secures Back-to-Back Wins
Chennai Super Kings capitalized on their home advantage, posting a formidable 192/5 after being asked to bat first. The innings was anchored by solid contributions from top-order batters Sanju Samson, who scored 48, and Dewald Brevis, who added 41.
In response, Kolkata Knight Riders struggled to build momentum and were restricted to 160/7. Left-arm wrist spinner Noor Ahmad delivered a match-winning spell for Chennai, returning figures of 3/21. Kolkata lost early wickets, including Finn Allen (1) and Sunil Narine (24). Noor derailed the middle order by dismissing Rahane for 28 and Cameron Green for a golden duck on consecutive deliveries. Rinku Singh successfully defended the hat-trick ball, while Rovman Powell (31 not out) and Ramandeep Singh (35) attempted a late recovery that ultimately fell short.

Standings and Injury Updates
The victory marks Chennai’s second consecutive win after opening the season with three straight losses, elevating them to eighth place in the standings. Fans and analysts tracking the tournament via ESPN Cricinfo are awaiting the return of veteran MS Dhoni, who is recovering from a calf injury and has not featured in the 2026 campaign.
Conversely, the Kolkata Knight Riders remain at the bottom of the points table with a single point acquired from an earlier washed-out fixture, leaving them winless after five matches.
Post-Match Reactions
Despite the difficult start to the season, Rahane emphasized the need for optimism in the dressing room.
“We just have to keep that head up, be positive, and have that self-belief,” Rahane stated during the post-match presentation. “I thought with the ball, we were treated really well. Conceding 190 on this wicket was acceptable, especially after they scored 70-odd runs in the powerplay. Pulling them back was an amazing job from our bowling unit.”
Rahane identified the batting powerplay as the primary difference between the two sides. “We just got 36 or 37 runs in the powerplay, and I thought that was the deciding factor. Hitting spinners in the middle phase was slightly challenging, but apart from that, the wicket was very good. We needed one batter to bat deep into the innings,” he concluded.
