Joe Root became the second-fastest batter to reach 23,000 international runs during England’s first ODI against Sri Lanka in Durham on Tuesday. Root completed the landmark in his 521st international innings, one innings quicker than Sachin Tendulkar, according to the original report.

Root needed three runs at the start of the match and reached the milestone by flicking the ball for four. Virat Kohli remains the fastest batter to 23,000 international runs, having reached the mark in 490 innings, while Tendulkar required 522 innings.

Root joins a select group of international batters

Joe Root became the eighth batter and the first England player to score 23,000 runs across international cricket. The group also includes Kohli, Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Ricky Ponting and Jacques Kallis.

Root made 44 in the Durham ODI before Sri Lanka debutant Sachindu Colombage bowled him. Root’s dismissal gave the 28-year-old leg-spinner his first international wicket.

Colombage later dismissed Jos Buttler lbw and finished with figures of 3-44. Root had entered the match with 7,826 ODI runs at an average above 51, including 20 centuries, and was already England’s leading run-scorer in the format.

Root has also moved past Tendulkar’s record for the most Test half-centuries. Tendulkar’s mark of 200 Test appearances remains 31 matches ahead of Root, while Root is set to turn 36 in December.
