Selectors have delayed India’s squad announcement for the five-match ODI series in New Zealand while they assess players in the ongoing unofficial ODI series between India A and Australia A. The ODI and Test squads are now likely to be named next week, according to a Times of India report.

The ODI series is scheduled to begin on November 4 in Auckland. Selectors also plan to prepare an alternate group for the final two ODIs because India’s Test regulars are likely to leave for their preparations.

India A series gives selectors another assessment window

The India A matches against Australia A give selectors a chance to assess ODI candidates against strong opposition before completing the New Zealand squad.

India A lost the first 50-over match by 125 runs, dismissed for 149 while chasing 275. Rajat Patidar scored 53, while Australian fast bowler Mahli Beardman took 4 for 23.

Sai Sudharsan, Devdutt Padikkal, Prabhsimran Singh and Suryansh Shedge were among the India A batters dismissed in the defeat. Beardman’s performance came on his return after seven months out with a lumbar bone stress fracture.

Squad rotation linked to the Test schedule

India’s selectors are expected to move some players between squads, allowing Test candidates to prepare for the longer-format matches that follow the ODI series.

The India A squad for three multi-day matches against New Zealand A has already been named, but it is expected to change as players are rotated ahead of the Tests. The report said some players involved in the current India A series could enter the ODI squad for the final two matches.

India have already named the T20I group

India have named the T20I squad for the New Zealand tour. Shreyas Iyer continues as captain of a group described as largely unchanged from the side playing against the West Indies.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar was included in the T20I squad after last representing India in the format in November 2022. The ODI and Test selections remain pending while selectors complete their assessments.
