Delhi Capitals Coach Munaf Patel Highlights Popularity Gap Between Bumrah and Kohli

Former India pacer and current Delhi Capitals bowling coach Munaf Patel has addressed the enduring popularity gap between batters and bowlers in Indian cricket. Speaking on a recent podcast, Patel offered a blunt assessment of Jasprit Bumrah’s stardom compared to Virat Kohli, while diagnosing systemic flaws in India’s fast-bowling development system.

The Batter-Bowler Popularity Divide

Jasprit Bumrah is universally recognized as a premier all-format fast bowler. However, Patel insists the traditional bias toward top-order batters remains deeply entrenched. While acknowledging Bumrah’s undisputed superstar status, Patel noted his mass appeal still significantly trails that of former Indian captain Virat Kohli.

“Look at Virat Kohli’s popularity and Bumrah’s popularity. There is a difference,” Patel stated. “Bumrah is a star, no doubt, but there is still a difference when you compare his popularity with someone like Virat Kohli.”

To quantify their respective longevity and impact in franchise cricket, consider their records in the Indian Premier League as of the 2024 season:

Player Primary Role IPL Matches Career IPL Statistic
Virat Kohli Top-order Batter 252 8,004 Runs
Jasprit Bumrah Fast Bowler 133 165 Wickets

Pace Over Swing: The IPL Auction Reality

Beyond individual stardom, Patel expressed concern over the grassroots development of fast bowlers under the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) framework. He identified a severe shortage of domestic bowlers capable of consistently breaching the 140 kmph mark, noting raw pace is the primary currency in modern T20 cricket.

Patel outlined the current recruitment logic for domestic fast bowlers:

  • The 125 kmph Bowler: Despite possessing excellent swing and control, bowlers operating at 125 kmph frequently go unsold in IPL auctions.
  • The 140+ kmph Bowler: Bowlers hitting 135 to 140+ kmph find the easiest pathway into the Indian national team and secure lucrative franchise contracts.

“If you ask me to find bowlers who can bowl at 125 kmph, I can bring many. But if you ask for bowlers who can consistently hit 140+, they are very rare,” Patel explained. “If you bowl 140+, you won’t go unnoticed. There’s almost no chance.”

Institutional Grooming and the NCA

Despite high demand for express pace, Patel questioned whether institutional levels, such as the National Cricket Academy (NCA), do enough to scientifically nurture fast bowlers. He emphasized the necessity of structured training regimens integrating specialized coaches, strength trainers, and physiotherapists to help young bowlers safely increase their speed.

“You need to understand how to build that pace, strength, technique, workload management. Who is teaching that? That’s where the focus should be,” he added.

Patel’s commentary serves as an urgent call for Indian cricket administrators to reform grassroots training. While the country celebrates a generational talent like Bumrah, sustaining a robust pipeline of genuine fast bowlers requires a systematic overhaul in how pace is identified, managed, and developed.
