Munaf Patel Backs Gautam Gambhir’s Strict Coaching Approach for Team India
Former Indian fast bowler Munaf Patel has strongly defended men’s cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir following recent scrutiny over his position. Speaking on the Bombay Sport Exchange podcast, Patel emphasized that Gambhir’s uncompromising management style is exactly what the national team requires during its current transition phase.
The Need for Control in the Dressing Room
Gambhir took over as head coach from Rahul Dravid in July 2024. Following India’s unprecedented 0-3 home Test series defeat to New Zealand in October 2024, questions surfaced regarding his tactical approach. However, Patel, who shared the dressing room with Gambhir during India’s 2011 World Cup campaign, insists the team needs a disciplinarian rather than a friend.
“Just remember this, if a head coach like Gautam Gambhir is removed, then handling the players will become very difficult,” Patel stated. “He is a genuine person; he calls the truth as it is and many people don’t like that.”
Patel outlined several reasons why the 43-year-old coach remains essential for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI):
- Fearless Decision Making: Gambhir maintains the authority to drop underperforming senior players when necessary.
- Independent Motivation: His motivation stems entirely from a passion for Indian cricket rather than financial gain.
- Clear Boundaries: He maintains a strict player-coach dynamic, avoiding the trap of becoming overly familiar with the squad.
Navigating a Difficult Transition
The coaching shift comes as senior stalwarts like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli navigate the late stages of their international careers, having already retired from T20 Internationals following the 2024 T20 World Cup victory. Patel noted that managing high-profile players requires a coach with established authority.
“Gambhir is the only one who’s handling the players today. Other than him, the players won’t be handled by other coaches,” Patel added. “The coach should have control. He can’t be a friend. If he is, then you are spoiling the system. There should be fear.”

Handling External Criticism
Patel acknowledged the friction Gambhir’s personality creates within the broader cricket ecosystem. The head coach has often faced pushback from the media and former players. Patel highlighted that this is an unavoidable byproduct of his management style.
“Think about it—how many enemies Gautam Gambhir is making while doing this job,” Patel remarked. “In a commentary panel, eight out of 10 people are against him. Four out of five selectors will be against him. But still, he does his work.”
As India navigates the high-stakes Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, Gambhir’s ability to isolate the team from external noise will be tested.
