Shreyas Iyer Credits Dressing Room Six-Hitting Contest for Punjab Kings’ 254-Run Blitz Against LSG
MULLANPUR – Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer attributed his team’s massive 54-run victory over Lucknow Super Giants on Sunday to a friendly six-hitting competition organized inside the dressing room. The win propelled Punjab to the top of the Indian Premier League standings, boasting 10 points from five wins in six matches and a commanding net run rate of +1.420.
Arya and Connolly Dismantle Lucknow Bowling
The foundation of the victory was a destructive second-wicket partnership between Priyansh Arya and Cooper Connolly. The duo posted an 182-run stand in just 13.2 overs, guiding the Punjab Kings to 254/7. This score surpassed Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s 250/3, setting a new benchmark for the highest team total of the current IPL season.
Arya scored 93 runs, while Connolly contributed 87. Their aggressive approach dismantled the Lucknow Super Giants pace attack, leaving the opposition chasing a record target. In response, Lucknow managed 200/5 in their allotted 20 overs, falling short by 54 runs.

Iyer Explains the Dressing Room Motivation
During the post-match presentation, Iyer expressed his admiration for the batting display, specifically highlighting the players’ ability to hit fast bowlers down the ground off the back foot.
“The partnership was exceptional, and some of the shots were jaw-dropping,” Iyer stated. “Their composure in the middle overs was sensational.”
Iyer revealed the internal motivation driving the aggressive batting strategy. “I was talking with Cooper and Arya and suggested we compete for the most sixes. The prize is my bat. It might not make total sense, but I hope it keeps the camp happy. When you let players be, they deliver. That is our mantra.”
The captain also highlighted the hands-off approach to individual batting plans and credited head coach Ricky Ponting for his pre-game influence.
“I do not tell them how to go about their specific innings; they have their patterns set. Ricky Ponting motivates the squad just before the game, I chip in, and the boys come out and deliver,” Iyer added.
The Punjab Kings will attempt to maintain their position at the top of the IPL points table when they face the Delhi Capitals on April 25.
