Former India captain Rohit Sharma was conferred the Padma Shri by President Droupadi Murmu for his contribution to Indian cricket, with the honour presented during the Padma Awards 2026 ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on Tuesday.
The Padma Shri is one of India’s highest civilian awards. The Times of India reported that Rohit received the award during the second Civil Investiture Ceremony.
Rohit’s honour follows major India titles as captain
Rohit Sharma’s Padma Shri recognition comes after a career in which he led India to the ICC T20 World Cup title in Barbados in 2024 and then guided India to Champions Trophy success in Dubai the following year.
The Mumbai-born batter had already been part of India’s squad that won the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007. After India won the 2024 T20 World Cup under his captaincy, Rohit announced his retirement from T20 internationals.

ODI career remains central to Rohit’s India profile
Rohit Sharma has scored 11,720 runs in 285 ODI matches at an average of 48.83 and a strike rate of 92.97. His ODI record includes the world-record individual score of 264 and three double centuries.
Rohit now continues to represent India only in ODI cricket after stepping away from T20 internationals and Test cricket.
Test and T20I numbers underline a long international career
Rohit Sharma made his Test debut in 2013 and represented India in 67 Test matches. He scored 4,301 Test runs, including 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries, with a career-best score of 212 against South Africa in 2019.

Rohit became the first men’s cricketer to play more than 150 T20 internationals. His T20I career ended after India lifted the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Padma Awards ceremony included 65 honours in the second phase
