Nitish Kumar Reddy has received clearance from the BCCI medical staff and is set to join the India squad in Delhi on Thursday ahead of the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan. The series is scheduled to begin on September 13, according to a Times of India report.

Reddy’s fitness clearance allows the all-rounder to link up with the squad, but his place in India’s playing XI has not been confirmed.

Return follows rehabilitation of quadriceps injury

Reddy has been recovering from a left quadriceps injury aggravated during India’s ODI series against Afghanistan in June. The 23-year-old initially sustained the injury while bowling in the first ODI in Dharamsala.

India rested Reddy for the second ODI in Lucknow before bringing him back for the third match in Chennai, where the all-rounder experienced further discomfort. The injury subsequently kept Reddy out of India’s white-ball tours of Ireland and England.

Final Bengaluru assessment clears the way

Reddy passed a fitness test last week and then completed a final match simulation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru on Wednesday. The assessment also covered Reddy’s bowling workload, which met the required fitness benchmarks.

India selected Reddy for the Afghanistan T20I series after the earlier fitness test. The final simulation provided an additional check before the all-rounder joined the national squad.

Asian Games assignment remains on schedule

Reddy is also part of India’s men’s squad for the Asian Games, which begin on September 24. The India squad is scheduled to leave Delhi for the Asian Games on September 18.

India will play a solitary T20I against Japan on September 22 at the Sano International Cricket Ground in Tochigi Prefecture before the Asian Games begin.

India won the men’s cricket gold medal at the previous Asian Games in Hangzhou in October 2023. The final against Afghanistan was washed out, with India declared the winner as the higher-seeded team.
