Mumbai Indians Coach Defends Jasprit Bumrah Amid Unusual Five-Match Wicketless Streak
Jasprit Bumrah is enduring an uncharacteristic lean patch with the ball. The Mumbai Indians lead pacer has gone five consecutive matches without a wicket in the Indian Premier League (IPL), a surprising return for a bowler renowned for dismantling batting orders with express pace and precise yorkers.
During a recent match against the Punjab Kings, Bumrah conceded 41 runs across his four overs and failed to secure a breakthrough. Despite these struggles, Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene has publicly backed his premier fast bowler.
Tactical Shifts and Powerplay Pressure
“Bumrah is bowling well; it is just where we are not putting pressure in the powerplay,” Jayawardene explained to reporters following the defeat. He noted that opposition batters have adapted their strategies specifically to counter the Indian international.
“They know they do not need to take too much risk against Bumrah. We tried a few different things which he is trying as well, but they are batting well. I cannot put a finger on something and say that he hasn’t taken a wicket,” Jayawardene added.

Overcoming Injury and Building Pace
The former Sri Lanka captain revealed that Bumrah managed a minor niggle following his International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup duties but has since recovered.
“Initially, he had a slight niggle. We wanted to build him up, and over the last few games, his speeds have gone up. He is very comfortable,” Jayawardene stated. “Sometimes, you need a bit of luck. He bowled some really good balls initially to Shreyas Iyer but wasn’t lucky enough. Once he starts taking wickets, teams might not be able to stop him.”
Mumbai Indians’ Bowling Deficits
Jayawardene acknowledged that the broader Mumbai Indians bowling attack lacks edge this season. Against the Punjab Kings, Mumbai posted 195/6 in their 20 overs. However, the bowling unit failed to defend the total, allowing Punjab to chase down the target with 21 balls and seven wickets to spare.
- First Innings: Mumbai Indians scored 195/6 (20.0 overs)
- Second Innings: Punjab Kings scored 196/3 (16.3 overs)
“As a bowling unit, we have lacked penetration on different surfaces. That is something we need to work on,” Jayawardene said.
The Mumbai Indians currently sit ninth in the BCCI tournament standings with one win and four defeats. The franchise will attempt to correct their course in their next fixture against the Gujarat Titans, with comprehensive statistics and ongoing coverage tracked via ESPN Cricinfo.
