Marco Jansen Credits Josh Hazlewood for T20 Bowling Evolution Ahead of IPL 2025
South African fast bowler Marco Jansen has experienced a rapid rise in international cricket over the past 18 months. Standing at 2.06 meters, the left-arm pacer has transitioned from a raw talent into a reliable all-rounder. As he prepares for his upcoming stint with the Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Jansen credits a shift in his bowling philosophy for his recent success.
Drawing Inspiration from Josh Hazlewood
In a format dominated by knuckleballs, wide yorkers, and slower bouncers, Jansen has found success by returning to basics. He relies heavily on hitting a consistent hard length, a strategy inspired by Australian fast bowler Josh Hazlewood. Rather than getting caught up in the chaotic variations typical of T20 cricket, Jansen trusts his height and natural bounce.
“It does not surprise me because Josh Hazlewood does the exact same thing,” Jansen stated, addressing his ability to bowl Test-match lengths in the 20-over format. “People ask the same question about him. How does he just hit a length and pick up wickets? He does not go for a lot of runs and he is consistent as well.”
Jansen noted that while both bowlers utilize their height, they bring different dynamics to the crease. “When I was younger, the problem was I was trying to bowl similar lengths to the other guys. I did not realize that what I bring to the table is completely different. I have to find my own way to be effective. The last year or so, I have felt comfortable in my own skin.”
Adapting to a New Role with Punjab Kings
After representing the Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad, Jansen enters a new chapter with the Punjab Kings. His role within the bowling attack is expected to shift. Often utilized as a new-ball specialist to maximize early swing, Jansen is adapting his skill set for the middle overs.
During the 2023-2024 Test series against India in South Africa, Jansen demonstrated his ability to extract steep bounce and trouble top-order batters with an older ball. He plans to apply this aggressive, wicket-taking approach in the IPL.
“I am used to taking the first or second over, but I also know I have the skills to adapt,” Jansen explained. “Coming in to bowl the third, fourth, or sometimes fifth over is definitely a different approach.”
