Former India Batter Vinod Kambli Battles Memory Loss and Stroke Risk Following Brain Clot

More than a year after recovering from a severe urinary infection, former India national cricket team batter Vinod Kambli continues to face serious health challenges. While his overall condition has stabilized, the 52-year-old remains under strict medical supervision due to a brain clot discovered 18 months ago following a hospitalization in Thane.

Ongoing Medical Supervision and Stroke Risks

According to former first-class umpire and close friend Marcus Couto, the brain clot heavily impacts Kambli’s short-term memory. Although he has successfully quit consuming alcohol, Kambli still occasionally smokes. This habit is strictly forbidden by his attending neurosurgeon, Dr. Aadil Chagla. Medical professionals emphasize that any smoking significantly increases his risk of suffering a severe brain stroke.

“Ever since he was hospitalized in Thane, Kambli has had a clot in his brain,” Couto stated. “His memory is impaired. He remembers things and then forgets them. Smoking is completely forbidden because it puts him at immediate risk of a stroke.”

Couto noted that well-meaning fans frequently offer Kambli cigarettes when he steps out of his residence in Bandra, unaware of his precarious neurological state. Doctors warn that nicotine and tobacco exposure are highly detrimental to his brain recovery.

Recent Public Appearances and Family Updates

Despite his physical challenges, which now require him to use a walking stick, Kambli recently demonstrated positive momentum. Ten days ago, he returned to the screen to shoot an advertisement for Dinshaw’s ice cream at the Mahim Juvenile Cricket Ground in Shivaji Park. Couto, alongside Kambli’s brother Ricky and former cricketer Viram Dayal, visited him at his Jewel Cooperative Society residence last week, reporting that the former player and his family were in good spirits.

Kambli is also securing the athletic future of his son, Cristiano, who aspires to play professional cricket. Former national selector Jatin Paranjape agreed to enroll Cristiano in his cricket academy completely free of charge.

Support From the Cricket Community

Public concern for Kambli surged in December 2024 when video footage showed him appearing unsteady on his feet alongside his childhood friend and former teammate, Sachin Tendulkar. The footage prompted immediate outreach from prominent figures within the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) ecosystem.

Following the public appearance, cricket legends including Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev extended their support. Members of India’s 1983 World Cup-winning squad have also proposed a comprehensive rehabilitation plan. While long-term recovery presents challenges, the coordinated support from former teammates ensures Kambli receives the necessary medical and social assistance.
