T20 World Cup: Aussie Cricketer's Comeback Despite Recovery Delays

Australian Cricketer on Track for T20 World Cup Despite Delayed Recovery

Mitchell Marsh, the Australian cricket star, is expected to be fit for Australia’s inaugural match in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 against Oman on June 5, despite a slight delay in his recovery process.

Marsh suffered a hamstring injury during his tenure with the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League, which led to his early exit from the tournament and return to Australia for rehabilitation.

Marsh, along with other Australian World Cup squad members not participating in the IPL, has begun preparations at the National Cricket Centre’s training camp. He was recently spotted practicing in the nets.

Marsh, an all-rounder for Australia, is concentrating on scoring runs and serving as a backup bowler for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.

Coach Andrew McDonald expressed satisfaction with Marsh’s batting practice but noted that he is still a few weeks away from bowling.

“His recovery is progressing well, albeit slightly slower than anticipated,” McDonald said. “However, with the IPL ruled out, we have ample time before our first game, which is just under a month away. So, there’s plenty of time for him to prepare.”

“He probably won’t be bowling in the next couple of weeks here. It’ll likely happen the week before we depart. Then, he’ll be able to increase his intensity when we’re over there,” McDonald added.

Despite Marsh’s expected fitness for the T20 World Cup and McDonald’s insistence that he won’t be rested, Australia has a wealth of captaincy options should the need arise.

World Cup-winning captain Pat Cummins, Matthew Wade, who has captained Australia on several occasions, and other leaders like Nathan Ellis, Glenn Maxwell, Travis Head, and Adam Zampa, who have led their respective Big Bash teams, are all part of the T20 World Cup squad.

“We have ample depth in the leadership space with Matthew Wade, who’s led before when Mitch hasn’t been available. And obviously, Pat Cummins has some leadership qualities,” McDonald added.

Australia is in Group B of the T20 World Cup, alongside England, Namibia, Oman, and Scotland.
