India’s team leadership joined the Mumbai review

The Mumbai meeting brought together BCCI officials, team leaders and Centre of Excellence management to review recent performances and plan the next phase of India’s international schedule. Head coach Gautam Gambhir, Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill, T20I captain Shreyas Iyer and Centre of Excellence director VVS Laxman attended the meeting.

Chief selector Ajit Agarkar did not attend. Saikia said Agarkar was out of Mumbai when the meeting was arranged at short notice and was in a location from which he could not join online.

The BCCI review covered India’s tours of Ireland and England, the recent Test series in Sri Lanka and the schedule leading towards the 2027 ODI World Cup. Saikia said the board wanted to identify the reasons for India’s poor results in Ireland and England before setting its preparation plan.

India’s defeats in Ireland and England formed a central part of the review, with the BCCI examining the team’s preparation and performances across both tours.

BCCI wants more preparation time before SENA tours

The BCCI plans to seek better rest and acclimatisation windows in the next Future Tours Programme, particularly before major series in South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia.

Saikia said the volume of cricket across the year was contributing to the board’s workload concerns. The BCCI has instructed officials involved in Future Tours Programme discussions to pursue schedules that provide players with adequate rest before demanding overseas assignments.

The BCCI also wants acclimatisation periods or warm-up matches before major SENA series. Saikia presented those measures as proposed scheduling priorities, not as confirmed fixtures, and no dates or opponents for preparatory matches were announced.

Fitness and return-to-play protocols remain under review

The BCCI reviewed general fitness and return-to-play policies after a series of injury concerns, while Saikia rejected suggestions of a coordination breakdown between the Indian team management and the Centre of Excellence.

Saikia said the BCCI’s committees, coaching groups and Centre of Excellence staff were coordinating properly. The board nevertheless considers the frequency of injuries a significant challenge and intends to examine how scheduling and recovery periods can reduce the strain on players.

Gill, Iyer and Gambhir provided feedback on fitness management and return-to-play procedures. Saikia said the discussion concerned policies for every player rather than the medical status or rehabilitation of a specific individual.

The BCCI did not announce a revised fitness policy after the meeting. The board’s stated next step is to use feedback from the captains and head coach while developing measures intended to prevent avoidable player unavailability during matches.

Saikia rejects fresh speculation over Rohit Sharma

Saikia declined to support speculation about Rohit Sharma’s ODI future or his possible participation in the 2027 World Cup, pointing instead to Rohit’s recent batting form.

Saikia said Rohit had scored 138 in his latest match. The report identified Rohit’s most recent ODI appearance as a century at Lord’s. Saikia did not announce a selection decision or provide a formal commitment about Rohit’s place at the 2027 tournament.

The distinction leaves Rohit’s long-term ODI status unconfirmed. Saikia’s comments defended the batter’s current performances but did not set a timeline for a future selection call.

No selection committee or director of cricket change discussed

The BCCI meeting did not discuss Ajit Agarkar’s future, changes to the selection committee or the appointment of a director of cricket, according to Saikia.

Saikia said Agarkar’s absence was caused by travel and connectivity issues rather than a dispute. The BCCI secretary also said the meeting’s focus remained on India’s recent results, preparation for upcoming series and the longer-term plan for the ODI World Cup.

The review therefore ended without an immediate personnel announcement. Any future decision involving the selection committee or a director of cricket remains outside the outcome reported from Thursday’s meeting.

Centre of Excellence continues search for sports science head

The Centre of Excellence is still operating without a permanent Head of Sports Science and Medicine, but Saikia said the vacancy had not stopped its fitness and rehabilitation work.

Saikia said about 16 staff members were in place to manage player fitness and rehabilitation services. The BCCI still wants a suitably qualified specialist to supervise that work and is continuing its search for a candidate.

The BCCI did not provide a deadline for filling the position. Saikia described the role as highly specialised and said the limited pool of qualified candidates meant the board would not make a rushed appointment.

The BCCI review produced a broad roadmap rather than immediate structural changes, with workload management, SENA preparation, injury protocols and the 2027 ODI World Cup identified as the main priorities.
