Sunil Gavaskar Defends Rishabh Pant After Explicit Post-Match Interview
Lucknow Super Giants captain Rishabh Pant faced significant backlash after using an explicit term during a live television interview. Following LSG’s defeat to the Rajasthan Royals at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on May 19, Pant told the post-match broadcast, “We’re a f***** good team.”
The comment drew immediate criticism from fans and cricket commentators. However, former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar offered a strong defense of the wicketkeeper-batter, shifting the focus to the scheduling decisions of the Indian Premier League broadcasters.
Gavaskar Questions Broadcaster Protocol
In his column for Mid-day, Gavaskar argued that television networks should allow losing captains time to decompress rather than immediately pulling them for live interviews.
“Rishabh Pant dropping the ‘F’ word in his post-game interview does make one wonder whether it is necessary to interview the captain whose team has just lost the game barely minutes earlier,” Gavaskar wrote. He highlighted the physical toll on a wicketkeeper-captain operating in extreme heat, noting that immediate frustration is a natural physiological and emotional response.
Gavaskar suggested a practical alternative for the media: interview the Player of the Match first. “Giving the captain of the team that has lost a few more minutes could well ensure that such things won’t happen,” he added. Gavaskar emphasized that Pant is typically one of the most cheerful players in cricket, which underscores the extreme fatigue and disappointment driving his reaction.
LSG’s Disappointing IPL 2026 Campaign
The incident capped off a difficult season for both Pant and the Lucknow Super Giants. The franchise finished at the bottom of the points table, struggling to find consistent form throughout the tournament. As documented by sports analytics platforms like ESPNcricinfo, the team’s statistical breakdown highlights their overall struggles during the 2026 season.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) maintains strict guidelines regarding player conduct under the IPL Code of Conduct. While players are regularly fined for broadcast indiscretions, the ongoing debate sparked by Gavaskar may prompt officials to review how post-match media obligations are handled immediately following high-pressure finishes.
