Pujara Urges Mindset Shift for Rishabh Pant to Replicate Test Dominance in IPL
Former India international Cheteshwar Pujara has expressed surprise over Rishabh Pant‘s inability to dominate the Indian Premier League (IPL) with the same authority he displays in Test cricket. Speaking during a recent broadcaster interaction, Pujara identified mindset issues, shot selection, and captaincy burdens as factors limiting the wicketkeeper-batter’s T20 impact.
The Disparity Between Test and T20 Records
Pant is universally recognized as one of India’s most destructive red-ball batters, possessing a track record of match-winning innings in England, Australia, and South Africa. However, his T20 numbers fall short of his red-ball achievements, prompting Pujara to question the performance gap.
“I am very surprised because someone like Rishabh Pant, who can attack any bowler in Test cricket, does not have as good stats in the IPL,” Pujara stated. He emphasized that Pant requires no technical overhaul but needs better mental clarity regarding his role and shot execution in the 20-over format.
Rishabh Pant Career Statistics Comparison
| Format | Matches | Runs | Centuries | Strike Rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Test Cricket | 38 | 2,693 | 6 | 73.61 |
| IPL | 111 | 3,284 | 1 | 148.93 |
Areas for T20 Improvement
Pujara outlined specific areas where Pant can elevate his T20 game for BCCI and franchise tournaments:
- Mental Clarity: Developing a clearer plan for identifying scoring areas, similar to his methodical approach in Test matches.
- Off-Side Development: Reducing reliance on leg-side dominance by expanding his stroke play on the off-side to prevent bowlers from limiting his scoring options.
- Relinquishing Captaincy: Stepping away from leadership roles to focus entirely on batting, which could alleviate pressure and improve individual output.
“In the T20 format, he is a little more dominant on the leg side. Working on his game on the off-side will allow him to be even more successful,” Pujara explained. He added that Pant knows exactly which pockets to target in red-ball cricket, even with boundary riders in place, but lacks that same certainty in T20s.
Impact Over Consistency
Addressing wider T20 batting philosophies, Pujara also defended India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav against criticism regarding occasional low scores. “Consistency is overrated in a T20 format,” Pujara noted, highlighting that high strike rates and match-winning impact carry more value than accumulating runs at a moderate pace.
For Pant, the immediate focus remains on bridging the gap between his undisputed Test pedigree and his unfulfilled T20 potential, ensuring his raw talent translates into consistent franchise success.
