Sunil Gavaskar said he wants Rohit Sharma to end his international career with more ODI centuries than his age after the India opener fell for 92 in the third ODI against West Indies.

Rohit scored 92 from 85 balls, including 10 fours and three sixes. His innings helped India set a total that West Indies chased down, with captain Shai Hope making an unbeaten 162 in the successful pursuit of 352.
Rohit’s dismissal left him on 35 ODI hundreds. Gavaskar said a century in the match would have brought the batter closer to the personal benchmark he hopes Rohit can reach before retirement.
Gavaskar explains his milestone for Rohit
Gavaskar wants Rohit’s final ODI century count to exceed his age when the India batter ends his international career.
Gavaskar said Rohit could potentially retire after the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027, although no retirement plan from Rohit was confirmed in the source report.

“I personally would like Rohit to have more ODI hundreds than his age,” Gavaskar said on JioStar, as quoted by news agency ANI.
Gavaskar tied the wish to his own final year in international cricket. He said he wanted to finish with as many Test centuries as his age but was dismissed in the 90s three times. Gavaskar retired at 38, and those missed hundreds would have taken his Test century total level with his retirement age.
Rohit responds after India’s early wickets
Rohit’s 92 followed a century in the second ODI and came after India lost captain Shubman Gill for one and Virat Kohli for a golden duck.
Gavaskar said Rohit had adjusted the aggressive batting template he used during the 2023 ODI World Cup. Rohit still scores quickly, according to Gavaskar, but now appears to put greater value on keeping his wicket and turning starts into substantial innings.

“He’s not a batsman who will score just 30-40 runs. He’s a hundred-maker,” Gavaskar said.
Gavaskar added that Rohit can still reach a century in 70 to 80 deliveries, which he described as a strong scoring rate in a 50-over match. The former India captain said that balance could help the team and give Rohit more chances to add to his century tally.
What remains unconfirmed
Rohit’s future beyond the 2027 World Cup remains unconfirmed, and Gavaskar raised retirement after the tournament only as a possibility.
Gavaskar’s comments focused on Rohit’s recent conversion rate. Rohit followed a hundred in the second ODI with 92 in the third, narrowly missing the 36th ODI century that Gavaskar wanted to see.
