Dinesh Karthik Urges Caution Over Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Hype: “Don’t Tag Him as the Next Sachin”
Former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has issued a strong warning against comparing teenage cricket prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar. Speaking on a recent podcast, Karthik emphasized that the young Rajasthan Royals recruit will face an entirely different set of modern challenges as his career progresses.
The Danger of Premature Comparisons
Sooryavanshi captured global attention during the 2025 IPL mega auction when the Rajasthan Royals secured his services for INR 1.10 crore, making him the youngest player ever to earn an IPL contract. While internet hype quickly drew parallels to Tendulkar—who made his international debut at age 16—Karthik pushed back against the narrative.
“What Vaibhav is doing is very special, but what I don’t want the people to do is tag him as the next Sachin because he is just 15 years old and doing what he is doing,” Karthik said during an appearance on the Quest Talk podcast. “I think what Sachin did was extraordinary. Vaibhav’s challenges will be completely different.”
Karthik highlighted the modern media environment and the pressures of franchise cricket. “Sachin’s challenges would have been as much on the field as they were off the field, but Vaibhav’s challenges will definitely be more off-field, because he possesses a lot of cricketing skills, dealing with everything that comes outside the sport,” he explained.

IPL Evolution: “Grown on Steroids”
Beyond individual players, Karthik reflected on the rapid evolution of the Indian Premier League. Having played in the inaugural 2008 season and recently taking over as the batting coach and mentor for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Karthik offers a unique perspective on the tournament’s trajectory.
“IPL, from its start to what it is today, is a completely different beast, and it’s like the sport has grown on steroids because a lot of things have changed,” Karthik noted.
He pointed specifically to the analytical shift in T20 cricket tracked by organizations like ESPNcricinfo and internal franchise data teams:
- Data Utilization: The amount of data and metrics used by franchises has reached phenomenal levels.
- Format Growth: It remains the fastest-growing format in cricket history.
- Economic Impact: The league functions as a lifestyle provider and a highly viable career option for young athletes.
“It is competing with other sports tournaments in the world in a very short period of time,” Karthik added, referencing the IPL’s financial parity with major global sports leagues. As Sooryavanshi prepares to navigate this high-stakes environment, Karthik’s advice serves as a timely reminder to let young talent develop without the weight of historical expectations.
