Virender Sehwag has likened Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s fearless batting approach to his own, saying the 15-year-old should be given enough opportunities to develop a long international career. Sehwag spoke about the young opener at the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s annual session on Saturday, according to a Times of India report.

Sooryavanshi has scored 246 runs in eight T20 internationals at a strike rate of 186. Sehwag, who scored 17,253 international runs during his career, pointed to their intent to attack from the outset as the main similarity between the two batters.
“Sooryavanshi is in his prime, and his thinking is somewhat similar to mine, that of hitting right from the first ball. Now, it is about when he gets the opportunity and how many matches he plays for India,” Sehwag said.
Sehwag says performance should outweigh age
Sehwag said that once a player reaches the IPL or international cricket, selection should depend on performance, regardless of age.

“Look, if you are playing in an age-category, it makes sense. If it’s Under-19, your age should be under 19. But once you play the IPL or play for India, age doesn’t matter,” Sehwag said.

Sooryavanshi has played in eight of India’s 18 T20 internationals since joining the senior set-up. Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma have been India’s preferred opening combination in recent matches, leaving strong competition for places at the top of the order.
Robin Singh supports competition for places
Former India all-rounder Robin Singh said Sooryavanshi has the talent to compete for selection but may have to wait while other players continue to perform.
“Sooryavanshi has enough and more talent. So, you know, even if he has to sit on a bench and wait it out, it’s okay. But the others have done very well,” Robin said.
Robin called competition within the squad healthy, saying it keeps pressure on players to maintain their performances. His comments also reflected the challenge India face in giving players sustained opportunities when several are competing for the same role.

Sehwag backs India’s 2027 World Cup prospects
Sehwag also praised Shubman Gill after his second ODI double century and said India’s bowling strength could prove decisive at the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa.
The former opener named Jasprit Bumrah as India’s leading fast bowler and linked India’s prospects to the condition and performance of the wider bowling attack.
“Among our fast bowlers, we have Bumrah, who is the best we have. If our bowling attack stays strong in the World Cup, then we can win it very easily,” Sehwag said.
