India’s Tour of England: Kuldeep Yadav Could Be the Surprise Weapon, Says Venkatapathy Raju

Introduction: As the Indian cricket team embarks on a challenging five-match Test series against England, starting on June 20 at Headingley, Leeds, all eyes are on how the squad will adapt to the absence of stalwarts like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin. With new captain Shubman Gill at the helm, the team faces a daunting task of repeating historic triumphs on English soil. Amidst this, former Indian spinner Venkatapathy Raju has pinpointed Kuldeep Yadav as the potential game-changer who could turn the tide for India in these unfamiliar conditions.

Kuldeep Yadav: India’s X-Factor in England?

Kuldeep Yadav, the left-arm wrist-spinner, has a remarkable record against England in home conditions, where he has claimed his highest wicket tally in Test cricket. However, his only Test appearance in England—at Lord’s in 2018—was forgettable. On a seaming, rain-affected pitch, Kuldeep struggled, bowling nine overs for 44 runs without a wicket and scoring a pair with the bat in a match India lost by an innings and 159 runs. But with Ashwin’s retirement, the onus is on Kuldeep to lead India’s spin attack alongside Ravindra Jadeja, forming a potentially lethal combination.

Raju, who played 28 Tests for India and scalped 93 wickets, is optimistic about Kuldeep’s prospects. Speaking to TimesofIndia.com in an interaction arranged by Sony Sports Network, Raju said, ‘Kuldeep Yadav can be a real surprise package in England. The current weather conditions, with a hot spell across Europe, are not too different from India. That’s why I believe he should be the first-choice spinner.’ Raju emphasized the need for the team management to back Kuldeep and instill confidence in him as a match-winner.

Comparing India’s spin options, Raju noted that while Washington Sundar hasn’t bowled much in red-ball cricket recently, and Jadeja excels on helpful pitches, Kuldeep brings an unpredictable X-factor. ‘Like England has Shoaib Bashir, India should bank on Kuldeep to lead the spin attack. He must be in the XI for most, if not all, Tests,’ Raju asserted.

Sarfaraz Khan’s Continued Exclusion Sparks Debate

Another talking point ahead of the series is the omission of Sarfaraz Khan, despite his stellar performances in domestic and international cricket. The 27-year-old made a blazing start to his Test career, scoring back-to-back fifties on debut against England in Rajkot 2024 and a commanding 150 against New Zealand last year. Additionally, Sarfaraz impressed with 92 in an unofficial Test against England Lions and a rapid 101 off 76 balls—including 15 boundaries and two sixes—in an intra-squad match at Kent County Ground, Beckenham.

Despite shedding weight and focusing on fitness, Sarfaraz finds himself out of the squad for both the recent Australia tour and the upcoming England series. Raju, however, isn’t surprised by the exclusion. ‘Sarfaraz is a young player, and there’s a lot of cricket ahead in the next two years. If he’s not in the XI now, it’s better for him to play domestic matches and stay match-ready for opportunities—perhaps due to injuries or form dips in the main squad,’ Raju explained. He cited past examples of players like KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma who had to bide their time, adding, ‘Sarfaraz is talented and has the potential to be a match-winner. When his chance comes, I’m sure he’ll grab it.’

A Young Indian Team Ready to Shine?

The upcoming series marks a new era for Indian cricket with a squad brimming with fresh talent but limited experience, especially in English conditions. India’s last Test series victory in England was in 2007 under Rahul Dravid, with historic wins in 1971 under Ajit Wadekar and 1986 under Kapil Dev. Can this young side, led by Gill, script history once again?

Raju draws parallels with India’s memorable series win in Australia a few years ago, where an inexperienced squad, with net bowlers like Washington Sundar and T. Natarajan stepping up, clinched the series. ‘This tour could be similar. There’s immense talent in the squad, and many have played overseas. It’s a great opportunity for them to step up, make a mark, and establish themselves as reliable Test players. I’m hopeful they’ll deliver,’ Raju concluded.

Conclusion: As India prepares to battle England in a series that promises intense competition, the spotlight is on Kuldeep Yadav to emerge as the spin spearhead and on youngsters to fill the void left by legends. The debate around Sarfaraz Khan’s exclusion continues to simmer, but the focus remains on whether this transitional Indian side can conquer the English challenge. With history beckoning and Raju’s words of encouragement ringing loud, the stage is set for an enthralling contest on English soil.
