Yash Dhull’s Comeback Trail: Overcoming Heart Surgery to Chase a Senior World Cup Dream

Life took an unexpected turn for Yash Dhull, the captain who led India to the 2022 Under-19 World Cup title. Instead of building on his early domestic success, the 22-year-old spent months confined to a bed recovering from heart surgery. Now, cleared to resume training, the top-order batter has his sights set on representing India at the senior level.

Diagnosing a Hidden Heart Defect

Dhull’s medical issues began with a series of troubling physical symptoms. Following advice from his family, he consulted specialists after experiencing persistent shortness of breath, chronic fatigue, and rapid weight loss. Medical evaluations during a training camp revealed a congenital hole in his heart.

“Many times after playing a full match, I would feel extremely tired. My fitness was gradually declining,” Dhull stated in a recent interview. “When I was in a camp, the issue was detected. Even the doctors were surprised and asked how I was still playing.”

With surgery presented as the only viable medical intervention, Dhull prioritized his long-term health over immediate cricket commitments.

The Rigorous Road to Recovery

The post-surgery recovery process forced the young cricketer to completely step away from the sport. Doctors placed strict restrictions on travel and physical exertion.

  • Initial Phase: Complete bed rest with constant monitoring of vital signs.
  • Early Rehabilitation: Basic cardiovascular exercises, which initially caused sudden spikes in blood pressure and heart rate.
  • Return to Play: Gradual reintroduction to netting sessions after missing the inaugural season of the Delhi Premier League (DPL).

Dhull attempted an early return for the DPL, but elevated physiological metrics made it unsafe. “When I started running again, it just wasn’t happening. Completing one round was very difficult. My heart rate and BP were going very high, so I had to back off,” he explained.

The health setback impacted his professional trajectory. After representing the Delhi Capitals between 2022 and 2024, Dhull went unsold at the recent Indian Premier League mega auction.

Despite the temporary setback, he maintains a steady perspective. Mentorship from senior BCCI players like Rishabh Pant, Ishant Sharma, and Axar Patel provides him with guidance. “You learn a lot just by being around them. They have always told me to prepare in such a way that when an opportunity comes, you do not miss it,” Dhull noted.

India’s Under-19 World Cup Legacy

Dhull belongs to an exclusive group of captains who have secured the ICC Under-19 World Cup for India. The national team holds the record for the most tournament victories, standing at five total championships.

Year Winning Captain Tournament Host
2000 Mohammad Kaif Sri Lanka
2008 Virat Kohli Malaysia
2012 Unmukt Chand Australia
2018 Prithvi Shaw New Zealand
2022 Yash Dhull West Indies

Winning the junior tournament is a recognized stepping stone, but Dhull’s ultimate objective remains clear. “The dream is to play a senior World Cup. I am confident that I will play one day,” he said, focusing entirely on his conditioning and the upcoming domestic season.
