“The Culprit is Me, Not Shaheen”: Sikandar Raza Addresses PSL Hotel Security Breach Allegations
Lahore Qalandars Stars Face Protocol Violation Accusations
Lahore Qalandars all-rounder Sikandar Raza has publicly claimed responsibility for a security protocol breach at the team hotel during the Pakistan Super League (PSL), actively clearing teammate Shaheen Shah Afridi of any wrongdoing. The incident involves allegations from Punjab Police that the two cricketers bypassed standard operating procedures (SOPs) to bring unauthorized visitors into player accommodations.
A formal letter from the Punjab Police to PSL CEO Salman Naseer outlined the breach, stating that Raza and Afridi forcibly escorted four visitors to Raza’s hotel room. The police report noted that prior clearance requests submitted to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) security manager and the Qalandars’ liaison officer were explicitly denied.
Conflicting Accounts of the Incident
The controversy centers on differing narratives between local authorities and the players involved. While police documentation outlines a sustained violation of security protocols, Raza insists the event was a misunderstanding driven by a rare family visit.
| Detail | Punjab Police Report | Sikandar Raza’s Statement |
|---|---|---|
| Visitor Status | Unauthorized individuals | Close family and friends of 19 years |
| Entry Method | Forcibly escorted by players | Afridi assisted at Raza’s request |
| Duration of Stay | Three hours | 40 minutes |
| Security Clearance | Requests denied by PCB | Unaware of strict SOP protocols |
Raza Defends Shaheen Afridi’s Involvement
In an interview with ESPNcricinfo, Raza provided his version of events, emphasizing that Afridi acted strictly on his instructions and did not force past hotel security. Raza explained that his visitors included his children and extended family members he rarely sees due to his international cricket schedule.
“Shaheen did not force anyone,” Raza stated. “My friends and family had come, and at my request, Shaheen helped them. If these were the SOPs, I wasn’t aware, and to some extent, Shaheen was not aware either. The culprit here is me, not Shaheen.”
Raza noted that he requested Afridi’s help to bring his family upstairs because he preferred to meet them in his room rather than the public business center.
PCB and PSL Ongoing Investigation
Sources within the Lahore Qalandars franchise confirmed the meeting took place but firmly denied allegations of forced entry. PCB media head Umar Farooq acknowledged that the board is aware of the situation and is maintaining communication with PSL management regarding the security protocols.
The Punjab Police have formally requested that the Pakistan Super League administration review the incident to enforce stricter compliance with hotel security mandates for the remainder of the tournament.
