T20 World Cup: Glenn McGrath Backs India for Final but Wary of ‘Dangerous’ England

Glenn McGrath Issues Warning to India Ahead of Semi-Final Clash

CHENNAI – Legendary Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrath has tipped India and South Africa to contest the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup but urged the Indian team to guard against complacency when they face defending champions England in the semi-finals.

Speaking at the MRF Pace Foundation, McGrath highlighted the unpredictable nature of the English side, emphasizing that despite a turbulent campaign, they possess match-winners capable of turning the game on its head.

Warning Against Complacency

While India has remained unbeaten in the tournament, displaying clinical dominance, England’s path to the knockout stages has been less convincing. However, McGrath believes this unpredictability makes them a significant threat.

“England are a dangerous team. If they really click on the day, they can do anything,” McGrath stated. “They have found ways to win. Maybe that will give them confidence that they have just peaked for the semifinal.”

He continued, assessing the matchup: “If India go out there and play as they have throughout this tournament and England go out and play as they have, India should go through.”

Bumrah: The Big-Game Asset

McGrath singled out Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah as the critical factor for India in the high-pressure knockout environment. With conditions in the Caribbean offering assistance to bowlers, McGrath expects the BCCI star to deliver.

“First, it will be about winning the toss and deciding what to do. India have a good bowling attack. Arshdeep Singh is doing well and Bumrah is quality,” McGrath observed.

“Arshdeep has been probably the pick of India’s bowlers but Bumrah is a big-game player. Sometimes during the big games, these players lift their games. I’ve got total faith in Bumrah when it comes to big matches. I’m always a big fan of him.”

South Africa’s Title Credentials

The former pacer also expressed admiration for South Africa’s formidable run in the tournament. The Proteas have shed their historical inhibitions, playing aggressive cricket that McGrath believes could take them all the way.

“The two teams I would pick to be in the final are going to be South Africa and India,” McGrath predicted. “Some time back, they came out and said they were focusing on T20 cricket moving forward. They have good hitters and a very good bowling attack.”

Australia’s Early Exit

Reflecting on his own nation’s performance, McGrath admitted he was not shocked by Australia’s elimination during the Super 8 stage. The 2021 champions struggled to find rhythm, eventually bowing out after losses to Afghanistan and India.

“I had said I was concerned with Australia. I thought they might make the Super 8, but to be honest, I didn’t feel they would progress much further,” he said. “Disappointing, but not surprising.”

The semi-finals of the ICC T20 World Cup promise high-octane action, with India looking to end their ICC trophy drought and England aiming to defend their title.
