Sanju Samson Named Sole Indian Contender for Player of the Tournament
NEW DELHI – Sanju Samson has secured a nomination for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 Player of the Tournament award, standing as the only representative from the Indian contingent. Despite missing the initial group stage matches, the Kerala wicketkeeper-batter has accumulated 232 runs and set a new national record for six-hitting in a single tournament edition.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) released the official shortlist following the semi-finals. Samson joins a diverse group of international performers vying for the honor.

Record-Breaking Impact and Semi-Final Heroics
Samson’s nomination rests heavily on high-impact performances during the Super 8s and the knockout stages. He currently sits as India’s third-highest run-scorer in the tournament, trailing only Ishan Kishan and captain Suryakumar Yadav.
His most significant contribution occurred during the semi-final at Wankhede Stadium against England. After being dropped on 15 by England captain Harry Brook, Samson capitalized to score a rapid 89 off 42 balls. This innings featured seven sixes, pushing his tournament tally to 16.
This feat allowed Samson to surpass Rohit Sharma’s record for the most sixes hit by an Indian batter in a single T20 World Cup edition (previously 15). Prior to the semi-final, Samson registered an unbeaten 97 against the West Indies, earning consecutive Player of the Match awards.
Samson’s Tournament Stats
- Total Runs: 232
- Total Sixes: 16 (Indian Record)
- High Score: 97* vs West Indies
- Key Knock: 89 (42) vs England in Semi-Final
Tactical Adjustments and Squad Entry
Samson was not part of India’s preferred XI at the tournament’s outset following a lean series against New Zealand. He entered the lineup during the group stage match against Namibia in New Delhi only after opener Abhishek Sharma contracted a stomach infection.
Management retained Samson for the Super 8 stage to counter spin threats that had troubled Sharma and Kishan earlier in the competition. The tactical shift to utilize Samson’s proficiency against spin proved effective in altering the tempo of India’s innings in critical matches.
Focus on Team Success Over Personal Accolades
Despite winning the Player of the Match award in the seven-run semi-final victory over England, Samson directed praise toward teammate Jasprit Bumrah. In a match seeing nearly 500 runs scored, Bumrah conceded only 33 runs in his four-over quota.
“All credit goes to Jasprit Bumrah, the world-class bowler, once in a generation bowler,” Samson stated in the post-match presentation. “I think that’s what he delivered today. This (award) should go to him, actually. If we didn’t bowl that way in the death overs, I think I would not be standing here.”
Final Showdown in Ahmedabad
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the final will take place on Sunday, March 8, at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Led by Suryakumar Yadav, India will face New Zealand in the title clash.
