South Africa Announce Power-Packed 15-Member Squad for WTC Final Against Australia

In a much-anticipated announcement, South Africa’s head coach Shukri Conrad has unveiled a formidable 15-player squad for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final against Australia. The high-stakes clash is set to unfold from 11 to 15 June 2025 at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground in London, often regarded as the ‘Home of Cricket’. This marks South Africa’s golden opportunity to claim their maiden WTC title after consistent performances over the past two cycles.

Leading the charge is the composed and tactical Temba Bavuma, whose captaincy has been instrumental in guiding the Proteas to this pinnacle. The pace attack, often dubbed one of the most lethal in modern Test cricket, will be spearheaded by the fiery Kagiso Rabada, alongside Dane Paterson and the returning Lungi Ngidi. Ngidi, who last donned the whites in October 2024, makes a much-awaited comeback, bringing his swing and seam mastery back to the fold. His return is a significant boost, especially given Lord’s reputation for assisting seam bowlers early in the game.

The bowling unit is further strengthened by all-round talents Marco Jansen, Wiaan Mulder, and uncapped sensation Corbin Bosch, who has turned heads with his domestic performances. For spin options, South Africa will rely on the experienced Keshav Maharaj, the leading wicket-taker among spinners in the current WTC cycle with 22 scalps, and the versatile Senuran Muthusamy. This blend of pace and spin offers a balanced attack tailored for the unpredictable English conditions.

On the batting front, the Proteas boast a dynamic line-up with proven performers like Aiden Markram, who has amassed over 2,500 Test runs at an average of 37.50, alongside the elegant Tony de Zorzi, rising star Ryan Rickelton, and middle-order anchors Tristan Stubbs and David Bedingham. Behind the stumps, Kyle Verreynne will take on the dual role of wicketkeeper and key batsman. Verreynne has been a standout in South Africa’s journey to the final, scoring crucial runs including a match-defining 114 against Pakistan in the 2024 home series, cementing his spot as a linchpin in the batting order.

Speaking on the squad selection, coach Shukri Conrad expressed confidence in the team’s preparation and balance. ‘This squad reflects the hard work and consistency we’ve shown over the last 18 months in the WTC. We’ve picked a group that can adapt to the unique challenges of Lord’s, and we’re thrilled to have Lungi Ngidi back. His experience and recent form add depth to our attack,’ Conrad stated in a press conference. With Lord’s known for its early morning moisture and lively bounce, South Africa’s fast bowlers could hold the key to dismantling Australia’s famed batting lineup.

The team’s build-up to the final is meticulously planned, with the squad assembling in Arundel on 31 May 2025 for an intensive training camp. They will also face Zimbabwe in a crucial warm-up match from 3 to 6 June at a nearby venue, allowing them to fine-tune strategies before arriving in London on 7 June. This preparation underscores South Africa’s determination to leave no stone unturned against the mighty Australians, who have historically dominated big finals, winning the inaugural WTC title in 2021 and retaining their stronghold in 2023.
