Sourav Ganguly Outlines Coaching Ambitions and Backs IPL Impact Player Rule
Former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president and national team captain Sourav Ganguly confirmed his interest in pursuing formal coaching roles. Currently serving as the Director of Cricket for the Delhi Capitals franchise network, Ganguly stated his desire to remain actively involved in the sport’s tactical and developmental aspects.
Transitioning from Administration to Coaching
Ganguly highlighted his recent involvement with the Pretoria Capitals in the SA20 League, where the team secured a runners-up finish in the inaugural season. Speaking at an event in Noida, he detailed his shifting focus from administration back to on-field operations.
“The most important thing for me is cricket,” Ganguly said. “When I used to play cricket, I used to bat, bowl and also captained the national team. But whatever I am doing now is in different phases. I just want to get involved with cricket. I also coached Pretoria Capitals in the South Africa League where we reached the final, and I have an interest in coaching.”
- Administrative background: Served as BCCI President (2019-2022) and holds leadership experience with the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB).
- Current involvement: Oversees cricket operations for Delhi Capitals and its sister franchises.
- Future outlook: Open to exploring head coach opportunities across global T20 leagues.
Stance on Formats and the Impact Player Rule
Evaluating the current state of international and franchise cricket, Ganguly maintained his preference for Test cricket, labeling it the most demanding format. Conversely, he categorized T20 cricket as the least challenging format for players, despite its massive commercial appeal and spectator draw.
Addressing the Indian Premier League (IPL) tactical regulations, Ganguly defended the Impact Player rule. The regulation, which allows teams to substitute a player during the match, has faced criticism from traditionalists and all-rounders. Ganguly predicts the regulation will remain active in upcoming seasons.
“The Impact player rule is going to stay,” Ganguly stated. “This is here to stay; someone will like it, someone will not.”
IPL Financial Growth and Emerging Talent
Ganguly analyzed the league’s financial trajectory, specifically citing high-value franchise valuations like recent Rajasthan Royals investment deals. He described the economic figures as “mind-blowing” and projected further expansion for Indian cricket.
He also pointed to emerging prospects like Jammu and Kashmir fast bowler Auqib Nabi as indicators of the league’s robust talent pipeline. The continued expansion of franchise cricket allows domestic players to gain immediate exposure against international veterans.
