Shubman Gill Criticizes IPL Impact Player Rule for Diminishing Traditional Cricket Skills
Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill has openly criticized the Impact Player regulation in the Indian Premier League (IPL), stating the provision removes fundamental skills from the sport. Gill’s comments follow similar feedback from prominent Indian cricketers, including Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, and Axar Patel.
During a recent IPL captains’ meeting in Mumbai, multiple franchise leaders requested a formal review of the substitution rule. The BCCI initially introduced the regulation ahead of the 2023 season and recently confirmed its continuation through the 2027 broadcast cycle.
The Argument Against the 12-Player Format
Speaking to reporters, Gill emphasized that cricket is fundamentally designed as an 11-player contest. He argued that allowing teams to substitute an extra batter or bowler mid-match alters the strategic balance required during high-pressure situations.
- Reduced adaptability: Teams no longer need to salvage innings with lower-order batters if early wickets fall.
- One-dimensional gameplay: The guaranteed extra batter heavily favors offensive strategies over bowling defense.
- Decline of all-rounders: Traditional all-rounders face reduced match involvement as teams opt for specialized substitutes.
“Personally for me, I don’t think there should be an impact player,” Gill said. “When you have a certain amount of batters and if a couple of your batters get out, there’s an amount of skill that you need to have to still get the scoreboard moving.”
Run Inflation and Flat Wickets
The 2024 IPL season witnessed historically high scoring rates, validating Gill’s concerns regarding flat wickets and inflated totals. The tournament saw the highest team totals in T20 franchise history, shifting the competitive balance heavily away from bowlers.
Highest Team Totals in IPL 2024
| Team | Score | Opponent |
|---|---|---|
| Sunrisers Hyderabad | 287/3 | Royal Challengers Bengaluru |
| Sunrisers Hyderabad | 277/3 | Mumbai Indians |
| Kolkata Knight Riders | 272/7 | Delhi Capitals |
Gill noted that defending or chasing massive totals on batting-friendly pitches lacks the competitive tension of traditional matches. “Chasing 180 on a challenging wicket or 160 on a challenging wicket is, for me, personally way more exciting than chasing 220 on a flat wicket,” he added.
BCCI Extends Rule Through 2027
Despite the pushback from international players, the substitution mechanic will remain active. According to ESPNcricinfo, the governing body has locked in the playing conditions for the upcoming seasons.
“It’s going to be there till 2027,” Gill acknowledged. “I understand it makes the game a bit more entertaining, but let’s see. It’s up to the BCCI what they’re going to do. They will take their decision, but personally, I don’t like it.”
