Shreyas Iyer Credits His Mother as the ‘Talisman’ Behind His Cricketing Success on Mother’s Day
In a touching tribute on Mother’s Day, Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Shreyas Iyer opened up about the unwavering support and inspiration he has received from his mother, the woman he calls his talisman. In a heartfelt video shared by PBKS on social media platform X this Sunday, Iyer expressed deep gratitude for his mother’s role in his life and career, especially during challenging times.
‘She’s been the pillar of my life. She has supported me through thick and thin, and she’s like a talisman for me,’ Iyer said with emotion, reflecting on how her presence has guided him through personal and professional milestones.
Iyer’s journey in the Indian Premier League (IPL) began in 2015 when he was signed by Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) for Rs 2.6 crore. The young batter from Mumbai made an instant impact, scoring 439 runs in his debut season and clinching the IPL Emerging Player of the Year award. Over the next six years, Iyer became a cornerstone for the franchise, consistently scoring over 400 runs in four seasons and eventually stepping into the captaincy role.
His leadership qualities shone through when he took over as captain mid-season in 2018, replacing Gautam Gambhir. Despite a tough year that saw Delhi finish at the bottom of the table, Iyer’s potential as a leader was undeniable. He turned the team’s fortunes around in 2019, guiding them to the playoffs for the first time since 2012. A year later, under his stewardship, Delhi Capitals reached their maiden IPL final in 2020, only to be defeated by the formidable Mumbai Indians.
Iyer’s crowning glory as a captain came in 2024, when he led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to their third IPL title, cementing his reputation as one of the league’s finest leaders. However, ahead of the IPL 2025 mega-auction, KKR released him, and Punjab Kings seized the opportunity, acquiring Iyer for a whopping Rs 26.75 crore. This season, he has led PBKS with grit and flair, steering the team to 16 points from 12 matches with an impressive record of 7 wins and 5 losses.
On the individual front, Iyer has been in scintillating form, amassing 405 runs in 12 matches at a stellar average of 50.63 and a breathtaking strike rate of 180.81. His consistency is highlighted by four half-centuries, with a standout unbeaten 97 against Gujarat Titans (GT) being his highest score this season.
Beyond the numbers, Iyer’s story is one of resilience and family values. As he continues to shine in the IPL, his tribute to his mother serves as a reminder of the personal sacrifices and emotional bonds that fuel a cricketer’s journey to the top. ‘Her belief in me has always pushed me to give my best,’ Iyer added in the video, a sentiment that resonates with fans and aspiring cricketers alike.
As Punjab Kings gear up for the remainder of the IPL 2025 season, Iyer will undoubtedly carry his mother’s blessings and strength with him, both on and off the field, aiming to lead his team to their maiden IPL title.
