Rinku Singh Secures UP Government Role and KKR Vice-Captaincy
Indian cricketer Rinku Singh experienced a major career milestone this week. The Uttar Pradesh government appointed the 27-year-old batter as a Regional Sports Officer (RSO), a Class-2 gazetted position. This administrative honor coincides with reports of his elevation to vice-captain for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season.
Appointment by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath presented the official appointment letter to Singh, acknowledging his contributions to Indian cricket and his gold medal victory at the Hangzhou Asian Games. The initiative is part of a broader state policy prioritizing government employment for high-performing athletes.
Adityanath noted that Uttar Pradesh leads the country in integrating athletes into government service, having already issued appointment letters to over 500 sports professionals. Because Singh is currently participating in a KKR training camp, state officials coordinated his appointment alongside several other international medalists.
Other Notable Athlete Appointments
The state government also provided employment to six other international medalists across various disciplines:
- Rajkumar Pal: Hockey player
- Ajit Singh: Javelin thrower
- Simran: Sprinter
- Praveen Kumar: Paralympic gold medalist

From IPL Sensation to National Asset
Singh gained global recognition during IPL 2023 when he hit five consecutive sixes against Gujarat Titans bowler Yash Dayal in the final over to secure a highly improbable victory. He followed that breakout season by helping KKR win the IPL 2024 championship.
His consistency in the lower middle-order earned him a regular spot in the Indian national team, where he secured an Asian Games gold medal and traveled as a reserve with the squad that won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2024. Now, managing his duties with the BCCI and KKR alongside his new state government responsibilities, Singh anchors both the present and future of sports administration in Uttar Pradesh.
