RCB’s IPL 2026 Homecoming at Chinnaswamy Hinges on Government Safety Clearance
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has released the initial schedule for the 19th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). While Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) are slated to open the tournament against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, the matches in Bengaluru come with a significant stipulation regarding government safety approvals.
Phase 1 Schedule and Election Adjustments
The first phase of the IPL 2026 season will run from March 28 to April 12, featuring 20 matches distributed across 10 venues. Because three states will hold State Assembly elections during this window, the BCCI has opted for a phased schedule release. The complete tournament itinerary will be finalized once the Election Commission confirms the polling dates.
The 10 venues hosting the initial block of games include Bengaluru, Mumbai, Guwahati, New Chandigarh, Lucknow, Kolkata, Chennai, Delhi, Ahmedabad, and Hyderabad.
The Chinnaswamy Inspection Mandate
RCB is scheduled to play five home matches in Bengaluru and two in Raipur. However, the Bengaluru fixtures require final clearance from an Expert Committee appointed by the Government of Karnataka.
According to the official BCCI release, the committee will inspect the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on March 13, 2026. Authorities will conduct a full-scale mock demonstration of match-day operations to evaluate the stadium’s crowd management, structural readiness, and safety protocols before granting the final operational approval.
Key Fixtures and Venue Splits
Phase 1 includes four double-header matchdays. Afternoon games are set for 3:30 PM IST, with evening matches following at 7:30 PM IST. The first double-header on April 4 features a marquee lineup tracked closely by ESPNcricinfo and global analysts:
- Afternoon Match: Delhi Capitals vs. Mumbai Indians at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi
- Evening Match: Gujarat Titans vs. Rajasthan Royals at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad
Home Venue Allocations
Several franchises will split their home games across primary and secondary venues during the 2026 season to expand their regional footprint and accommodate logistical requirements.
| Franchise | Primary Base | Secondary Base |
|---|---|---|
| Royal Challengers Bengaluru | M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru | Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh Stadium, Raipur |
| Rajasthan Royals | Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur | ACA Stadium, Guwahati |
| Punjab Kings | Maharaja Yadavindra Singh Stadium, New Chandigarh | HPCA Stadium, Dharamsala |
As the March 13 inspection approaches, franchise officials and ticketing partners await the final verdict from Karnataka authorities to ensure IPL operations proceed without interruption in Bengaluru.
