Matheesha Pathirana Cleared for IPL 2026, Bolstering KKR Pace Attack

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has officially granted fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana a No Objection Certificate to participate in the 2026 Indian Premier League. The medical clearance provides immediate relief to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), whose fast-bowling resources faced early setbacks due to injuries ahead of the season.

Injury Recovery and SLC Clearance

Pathirana recently completed a comprehensive rehabilitation program for a calf strain sustained during international play governed by the International Cricket Council. SLC Secretary Bandula Dissanayake confirmed the bowler’s availability for the upcoming franchise tournament.

“He has completed rehab and he is fit. We have given him the NOC to participate in the IPL,” Dissanayake stated. “The franchise will assess his match readiness upon arrival, but as far as the board is concerned, he is medically cleared.”

Pathirana will travel to Mumbai to join the KKR squad before their opening fixture against the Mumbai Indians on March 29. Official updates regarding team schedules are published on the official IPL website.

KKR Pace Department Adjustments

The Kolkata Knight Riders entered the pre-season with limited pace options. Fast bowler Harshit Rana remains sidelined with a knee ligament strain. To reinforce the bowling attack, KKR management acquired Zimbabwe international Blessing Muzarabani and initiated selection trials for domestic fast bowlers. Trialists include Akash Madhwal, Navdeep Saini, and Simarjeet Singh.

Known for a slinging action that earned him the moniker Baby Malinga, Pathirana operates primarily as a death-overs specialist. His return strengthens a KKR unit that will also integrate newly acquired New Zealand internationals Finn Allen, Tim Seifert, and Rachin Ravindra.
