Karnataka Government Clears M. Chinnaswamy Stadium to Host RCB for IPL 2026

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) have officially received government approval to host Indian Premier League 2026 matches at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. The decision resolves months of venue uncertainty following the tragic stampede that occurred during Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) title celebrations earlier this year.

Government Safety Review and Clearance

Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwar chaired a high-level security meeting on Monday to evaluate the venue’s infrastructure. The session included a state-appointed expert committee alongside representatives from the KSCA, RCB management, and the event management firm DNA. The committee submitted a comprehensive compliance report detailing enhanced crowd control protocols for the 32,000-capacity arena.

According to KSCA spokesperson Vinay Mruthyunjaya, the venue clearance depended entirely on meeting strict operational guidelines set by the state police and emergency services.

  • Structural Assessments: Verification of entry and exit gate capacities.
  • Crowd Management: Implementation of advanced biometric turnstiles and reinforced barricading.
  • Emergency Response: Dedicated medical corridors and expanded evacuation routes.

IPL 2026 Opening Match and Venue Distribution

The 19th edition of the Indian Premier League commences on March 28. Defending champions RCB will open the tournament against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Bengaluru. The M. Chinnaswamy Stadium will also host the official IPL opening ceremony and the annual RCB Unboxing event.

To balance localized demand with logistical constraints, RCB will split their seven home fixtures across two venues. Five matches remain in Bengaluru, while the franchise will utilize the 65,000-capacity Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium in Raipur for the remaining two games.

Home Venue City Matches Allocated Stadium Capacity
M. Chinnaswamy Stadium Bengaluru 5 32,000
Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh Stadium Raipur 2 65,000

KSCA Statements on Venue Security

The KSCA released a formal statement acknowledging the state government’s rigorous approval process. The association highlighted the coordination required to bring professional cricket back to the city center safely.

The official release thanked Bengaluru Commissioner of Police Sreemant Kumar Singh, who serves as the Member Secretary of the Expert Committee, for evaluating all security and operational metrics. The KSCA committed to maintaining these upgraded safety standards throughout the two-month tournament window.
