The Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2026 season opened to an unprecedented equipment malfunction on March 26, drawing sharp criticism from former national wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal. During the tournament opener between the Lahore Qalandars and the newly formed Hyderabad Kingsmen at Gaddafi Stadium, the standard white cricket ball unexpectedly turned pink due to dye transferring from the Kingsmen players’ jerseys.

Cricketers routinely use their jerseys and towels to manage sweat and polish the ball to maintain its shine for swing bowling. However, the poor dye quality of the Hyderabad Kingsmen kits caused the fabric color to bleed directly onto the white leather ball. The visual of a pink ball in a limited-overs match immediately sparked outrage and mockery across social media platforms.

Speaking on the YouTube channel The Game Plan, Akmal delivered a scathing assessment of the league’s quality control.

“I genuinely thought Hyderabad Kingsmen got their kits dyed at some dupatta lane back home, the kind where they recolor white clothes for bargain rates,” Akmal stated. In Urdu, he remarked, “Kasam se, mujhe laga Hyderabad Kingsmen ne apne kits kisi desi dupatta lane se color karwaya hain, vahi jo saste mein safed kapdon ko naya rang chadha dete hain.”

Player Reactions and Umpire Intervention

Hyderabad Kingsmen captain Marnus Labuschagne addressed the equipment failure during the post-match press conference, confirming that he brought the issue to the match officials immediately.

“I did say to the umpires after the second over, ‘What is going on? The ball is red.’ It must be from the clothes or something like that,” Labuschagne explained. “I have not seen anything like this before. I have seen occasions where something on a bat comes onto the ball, or when it hits the pad and takes a bit of paint off. But I have never seen this happen with clothing. I am sure they will sort it out in the next few games.”

According to the ICC Playing Conditions, altering the condition of the ball is strictly monitored. While polishing with a uniform is legal provided no artificial substance is used, dye transfer forces umpires to assess if the ball remains fit for play.
