Irfan Pathan Warns 14-Year-Old Prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Ahead of IPL 2026
The Rajasthan Royals will open their 2026 Indian Premier League campaign against the Chennai Super Kings on March 30 at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. The focus centers on 14-year-old top-order batsman Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who enters the tournament facing heightened scrutiny from opposition bowlers following a breakout year.
Under-19 World Cup Dominance
Sooryavanshi approaches the IPL season carrying significant momentum from his international youth performances. He recently anchored India to an Under-19 World Cup title, highlighted by a 175-run performance in the final. Across the tournament, he established himself as an elite ball-striker, leading the competition in boundary production.
| Matches | Total Runs | Average | Strike Rate | Centuries | Total Sixes |

Tactical Adjustments and Opposition Scouting
Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan indicated that IPL franchises have heavily scouted the teenager. Speaking on the JioStar broadcast, Pathan stated that Sooryavanshi’s extensive exposure across formats—including his appearances in the Ranji Trophy for Bihar and the U-19 circuit—has provided data analysts ample footage to identify vulnerabilities.
“This season of the IPL for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will be a learning one,” Pathan said. “He played in the tournament last year, he has played domestic cricket, and he is playing cricket in all formats everywhere. In white-ball and red-ball cricket, everyone is taking note of him. Bowlers are doing the same. Other players are watching his videos and analyzing his weaknesses.”
The Path to Consistent Production
According to International Cricket Council data models and domestic scouting reports, young batsmen often face a sharp decline in production during their second franchise season once their initial tendencies are mapped. Pathan emphasized that Sooryavanshi must adapt to targeted bowling plans.
“This IPL season, all bowlers will be ready with their strategies, and Vaibhav will be looking to prove a point,” Pathan observed. “He has slammed centuries with ease in all forms of cricket. When you do that consistently, your confidence keeps going higher. He can prove a point by slamming another hundred in the IPL. When he scores runs consistently this season, that is when we can say Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has upgraded his game.”
The upcoming fixture in Guwahati will serve as the first metric to evaluate how well the 14-year-old has adjusted his technique against elite pace and spin units operating with customized tactical plans.
